No. 11 Clemson Chasing New Program Record vs. Virginia Tech

No. 11 Clemson has a chance to make history when it hosts Virginia Tech on Saturday evening, closing out what has already been a record-setting regular season.

A win would give Clemson (25-5, 17-2 ACC) its most regular-season victories ever, surpassing the 1986-87 Tigers’ mark of 25 wins.

Additionally, the Tigers have already set a program record with 17 ACC wins, a testament to how dominant they’ve been under coach Brad Brownell.

“I thought we had a chance to have a good team,” Brownell said on Thursday. “Are we 17-2 now in the league? I don’t know that I believed we’d be that.”

Clemson enters the game on a seven-game winning streak, and with the ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament ahead, the Tigers hope to carry their momentum deep into March.

Clemson’s Transfers Driving Success

Clemson’s most recent victory—a 78-69 win at Boston College on Wednesday—highlighted the importance of two transfers who have been critical to the Tigers’ success this season.

Victor Lakhin, a Cincinnati transfer, grabbed two clutch offensive rebounds in the closing minutes, finishing with 11 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Meanwhile, former Boston College star Jaeden Zackery led all scorers with 21 points, delivering a standout performance against his former team.

Brownell credited his two transfers for Clemson’s breakthrough season.

“They are both very hungry to try to be a tournament team,” Brownell said. “Obviously, we are going to be that this year, and it’s because of plays like that.”

Zackery Staying Focused on the Task at Hand

Though Clemson is locked into the NCAA Tournament, Zackery is not looking too far ahead.

“I’m definitely excited but, honestly, I’m not looking at that right now,” he said.

Instead, Clemson will try to close out the regular season strong on Senior Day, before shifting its attention to winning an ACC Tournament title and making a deep NCAA run.

Virginia Tech Looking to Bounce Back After Blowout Loss

Virginia Tech (13-17, 8-11 ACC) has been inconsistent, but has actually been better on the road (5-4) than at home this season.

The Hokies will need to regroup quickly, however, after suffering their worst loss of the season on Tuesday—91-59 against North Carolina.

Head coach Mike Young was frustrated with turnovers, as Virginia Tech gave the ball away 12 times, one below its ACC-worst average of 13 per game.

“It’s really bothersome and I haven’t been able to correct it,” Young said. “That is very frustrating for me. I don’t know that I’ve had this in my 23 years, and it keeps me up at night.”

Virginia Tech’s Young Struggles in Last Game

Jaydon Young had been Virginia Tech’s most dangerous scorer in recent weeks, posting 27 points against Miami and 26 against Syracuse.

But against North Carolina, Young struggled, finishing with just 12 points on 4-of-15 shooting, including 0-of-8 from three-point range.

For the Hokies to have a chance at pulling off an upset, they will need Young to bounce back and find his scoring touch against Clemson.

Previous Meeting: Clemson Won in January

Clemson already owns a win over Virginia Tech this season, claiming a 72-57 victory in Blacksburg on Jan. 25.

In that game, the Tigers held the Hokies to just 38.5% shooting and forced 14 turnovers, a formula they will hope to repeat on Saturday.

What’s at Stake?

For Clemson, the focus is continuing its momentum into the ACC Tournament while setting a new program record for wins.

For Virginia Tech, it’s about ending the regular season on a positive note and proving they can still be competitive heading into the conference tournament.

With Clemson playing its final home game on Senior Day, expect a motivated performance as the Tigers chase history.
