Ryan Kalkbrenner, Creighton Set Sights on DePaul
NEW YORK — Ryan Kalkbrenner recently found his name mentioned alongside a Big East legend. The Creighton senior standout became just the second player in conference history—joining Patrick Ewing—to win the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award four times. Now, he looks to continue his dominance as second-seeded Creighton (22-9) faces 10th-seeded DePaul (14-18) in a Big East tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night.
Kalkbrenner earned his latest accolade after leading the conference with 80 blocked shots. The Bluejays have had at least a share of the award in six of the past nine seasons, with Khyri Thomas also winning in 2018.
“That’s crazy because I wouldn’t think of myself in the same conversation as (former Georgetown and New York Knicks star) Patrick Ewing, at least not yet,” Kalkbrenner said. “So it’s definitely a huge honor to get that award and tie Ewing in that way. Still a lot of work to do for us.”
Beyond his defensive prowess, Kalkbrenner has been an offensive force, leading the Big East in field-goal percentage (66.3%) and ranking second in scoring (19.4 ppg). He has been particularly dominant down the stretch, averaging 22.8 points over his final five regular-season games, including a 27-point performance in Saturday’s 87-74 win over Butler.

Creighton’s Quest for a Big East Title
Creighton is seeking its first Big East tournament championship after reaching the title game four times since joining the league, including twice with Kalkbrenner in 2021 and 2022.
“That would be awesome,” Kalkbrenner said. “In my time, we’ve never won the Big East regular season or tournament, and that’s something I would love to do.”
While Kalkbrenner anchors the interior, Creighton also boasts a dangerous perimeter attack. Steven Ashworth, who shot 38% from beyond the arc in the regular season, ranks fourth in the Big East in three-point shooting percentage.
Ashworth has been heating up, making 24-of-59 three-point attempts over his last six games, including a seven-make performance against Butler.
DePaul Looks to Keep Rolling
First-year head coach Chris Holtmann has led DePaul to an impressive turnaround, improving by 11 wins from last season. The Blue Demons advanced to the quarterfinals with a gritty 71-67 win over Georgetown on Wednesday.

DePaul enters on a three-game winning streak, shooting at least 50% from the field in each victory. This recent success follows a brutal 2-14 stretch, which included a pair of losses to Creighton—73-49 at home on Jan. 21 and 75-65 on Feb. 26, when Kalkbrenner dominated with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
“It’s going to be a tough matchup with Kalkbrenner,” Holtmann said. “Bottom line, it’s not just Kalkbrenner. They have a terrific team. For us, we’re grateful for an opportunity to come out and compete, and we can’t wait to get out there and play again and wear the DePaul uniform. We’re super excited about it.”
A key addition for DePaul is NJ Benson, who missed the previous matchup with Creighton due to injury. Benson made a huge impact in the opening-round win, scoring 18 points—including 13 in the second half—and helping the Blue Demons secure their second Big East tournament win in three seasons.
If DePaul hopes to pull off an upset, it will need Benson to provide a strong interior presence against Kalkbrenner while continuing its hot shooting streak.
