No. 24 Creighton Aims to Complete Season Sweep of UConn
Creighton has been on fire in Big East play, surging into second place in the conference with a program-record nine-game winning streak. The Bluejays (18-6, 11-2 Big East) will aim to extend their streak and complete a season sweep of UConn (16-7, 8-4 Big East) when they meet Tuesday in Omaha, Nebraska.
Creighton Keeps Rolling
The Bluejays took down UConn 68-63 on the road back on Jan. 18, and they enter this rematch just one game behind St. John’s in the Big East standings.
Their latest statement win came on Saturday, a 77-67 victory over Marquette, avenging an earlier loss to the Golden Eagles. Creighton hasn’t lost since Jan. 3, and head coach Greg McDermott isn’t surprised by the team’s turnaround.
“What’d (St. John’s head coach Rick) Pitino say? ‘I can’t believe we lost the other two?'” McDermott joked.
Key players fueling Creighton’s hot streak:
- Steven Ashworth scored a season-high 22 points with six 3-pointers against Marquette. He leads the team with 6.8 assists per game and averages 16.9 points.
- Ryan Kalkbrenner, the team’s top scorer (19.2 PPG), added 19 points and four blocks in that game.
- Jamiya Neal, who scored 14 against Marquette, erupted for a career-high 24 points in the previous win over UConn.
Creighton’s 11-2 conference record is its best start in Big East play since joining the league in 2013-14.

UConn Struggling to Find Consistency
Meanwhile, UConn is looking to rebound after a tough loss to St. John’s (68-62) on Friday. That game saw the Huskies blow a 14-point first-half lead while turning the ball over 22 times and shooting a season-low 39.2 percent from the field.
Freshman Liam McNeeley, who missed the first meeting with Creighton due to an ankle injury, made his return on Friday and posted an impressive 18 points and 11 rebounds. Despite the strong individual showing, he was frustrated with the team’s result.
Other key UConn contributors:
- Solo Ball leads the Huskies with 15.0 PPG.
- Alex Karaban contributes 14.4 PPG, while McNeeley adds 13.9 PPG.
- Tarris Reed Jr. had 12 points and 15 rebounds against St. John’s but couldn’t prevent the collapse.
What’s at Stake?
A win for Creighton would keep them in striking distance of first place in the Big East, while a UConn victory would halt their recent slide and keep them in the race.
Can the Bluejays continue their dominance, or will UConn clean up its mistakes and get revenge? The answer awaits on Tuesday night.
