Struggling Butler Hopes Trip to Georgetown Sparks Turnaround
Both Butler and Georgetown are in desperate need of a win as they face off on Friday in Washington, D.C. Butler has yet to win a road game this season, while Georgetown is reeling from an offensive slump that has plagued them in Big East play.
Butler’s Road Struggles
The Bulldogs (9-12, 2-8 Big East) have matched their worst 10-game start in conference play since joining the Big East in 2013-14. They remain winless on the road despite taking No. 19 UConn to overtime in a close 80-78 loss on Jan. 21.
If there is a place for head coach Thad Matta to turn things around, it might be at Georgetown. Butler has been dominant at Capital One Arena, winning eight straight games at Georgetown’s primary home venue. Last season, the Bulldogs cruised to a 90-66 victory in Washington, following an 80-51 win in 2023.
On Tuesday, Butler held a halftime lead against No. 9 Marquette before fading in the second half and losing 78-69. The Bulldogs shot 57.1 percent in the first half but struggled after the break, finishing with a 25.8 percent shooting performance in the second half.
Matta acknowledged how offensive struggles affected their defensive intensity:
“There comes a point where you’re struggling to score… it starts to weigh on your defense,” Matta said.
Georgetown’s Offensive Woes
The Hoyas (13-8, 4-6 Big East) have lost six of their last seven games and are coming off their worst offensive performance of the season, a 66-41 loss to No. 15 St. John’s.
Head coach Ed Cooley admitted that the team is searching for solutions after scoring their fewest points in a game since the 2012-13 season.
“41 points in a high-major game,” Cooley said. “We need to look at our offense, our shot selection.”

Georgetown has now failed to score 70 points in nine of its 10 Big East games. The team shot just 24.6 percent from the field against St. John’s and had a season-low six assists.
Freshman Malik Mack was the only player to reach double figures, scoring 13 points but committing six turnovers. Meanwhile, leading scorer Thomas Sorber (14.5 ppg) earned his fifth Big East Freshman of the Week award but struggled to lift Georgetown’s offense.
Key Players to Watch
- Butler: Jahmyl Telfort (16.2 ppg), Pierre Brooks II (14.9 ppg)
- Georgetown: Thomas Sorber (14.5 ppg), Malik Mack (13.2 ppg)

Game Outlook
Both teams are struggling, but Butler’s historical success at Georgetown gives the Bulldogs a slight edge. If the Hoyas can rediscover their offense, they might be able to break out of their slump and defend their home court.
Tip-off is set for Friday, February 2, in Washington, D.C.
