DePaul, Georgetown Look to Extend Much-Improved Seasons
NEW YORK — Georgetown showed major improvement in coach Ed Cooley’s second season as Micah Peavy earned a spot on the All-Big East first team and injured center Thomas Sorber made the third team and the conference’s all-rookie team.
Hoyas Looking to Continue Their Progress
The seventh-seeded Hoyas (17-14) will face 10th-seeded DePaul in the first round of the Big East tournament on Wednesday night. The winner will advance to face second-seeded Creighton on Thursday.
Georgetown improved by eight wins after going 9-23 in 2023-24, ending a run of three consecutive 20-loss seasons. Cooley successfully recruited Peavy from TCU via the transfer portal and brought in Sorber, who was a force before suffering a season-ending foot injury.

Peavy led the Hoyas with 16.9 points per game, including 19.2 in conference play, making him the first Georgetown player named to the All-Big East first team since Jessie Govan in 2018-19. Sorber averaged 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while earning seven Big East Freshman of the Week honors before his injury.
Since Sorber’s last game, the Hoyas have gone 2-4, including an 83-77 loss to DePaul on Sunday. Peavy scored 29 points in the defeat, but Georgetown allowed the Blue Demons to shoot 56.6 percent from the field.
“We know in order to win games, everyone has to step up. We haven’t had a full squad for most of the year, but we’ve still been in close games, and we’ve learned how to execute when it counts.” – Micah Peavy
DePaul Peaking at the Right Time
DePaul (13-18) has made significant strides under first-year coach Chris Holtmann, improving by 10 wins from last season. The Blue Demons enter the tournament on a two-game winning streak, having beaten Providence and Georgetown.
DePaul’s offense has been clicking, scoring at least 80 points while shooting over 50 percent from the field in both victories. It was the first time since 2019 that the Blue Demons shot 50 percent in back-to-back Big East games and the first time since 2022 they scored 80-plus points in consecutive conference matchups.
“I think that you want to be playing well late. One of our goals this year, I said, ‘I’d like for us to be able to say we’re playing well late.’ And that’s clearly demonstrated here.” – DePaul coach Chris Holtmann
CJ Gunn (12.8 PPG) and Isaiah Rivera (10.7 PPG) have been key contributors, with Rivera scoring a season-high 21 points against Georgetown in the regular-season finale, marking his fifth straight double-digit performance.
