Missouri Takes Momentum to Georgia in SEC Showdown

Just a season removed from an 8-24 record and a winless SEC campaign, No. 21 Missouri is suddenly one of the biggest surprises in college basketball. The Tigers look to continue their resurgence on Saturday when they visit Georgia in an SEC battle that could have major implications for both teams’ postseason hopes.

Missouri’s Stunning Turnaround

After a two-game losing skid, Missouri (18-6, 7-4 SEC) bounced back in dominant fashion with an 82-58 rout of Oklahoma on Wednesday. Mark Mitchell erupted for a career-high 25 points, showcasing the talent that made him a top recruit before transferring from Duke.

Head coach Dennis Gates praised Mitchell’s response after a lackluster performance against Texas A&M:

“I wasn’t happy with his performance at all, and I think he got the message. His versatility gives us an advantage on both ends.”

Missouri’s balanced offense features Tamar Bates (13.5 PPG) and Mitchell (12.9 PPG), but their real weapon is Caleb Grill, who leads the SEC in 3-point shooting (48.6%). The Tigers are hitting 37.4% from deep as a team, ranking second in the SEC—a massive jump from last season’s 31.9%.

Georgia Needs a Statement Win

Georgia (16-9, 4-8) is desperate for a marquee victory to stay in the NCAA Tournament conversation. The Bulldogs have lost seven of their last nine and let an 11-point second-half lead slip away in Tuesday’s 69-53 loss at No. 8 Texas A&M.

Head coach Mike White admitted his team struggled against A&M’s adjustments:

“We looked as good as we’ve looked all year in the first half. But when they switched to a matchup zone, we got thrown off balance.”

Asa Newell (15.0 PPG, 6.7 RPG) has been Georgia’s leader, but the freshman struggled against Texas A&M, shooting just 1-for-6. Meanwhile, Silas Demary Jr. (11.8 PPG) continues to be a steady contributor, but Georgia’s youth and injuries are starting to show.

Veterans Dakota Leffew and Tyrin Lawrence both missed Tuesday’s game, leaving an already turnover-prone team (13.3 TOs per game, 3rd most in SEC) even more vulnerable.

Key Matchup: Missouri’s Shooting vs. Georgia’s Defense

Missouri’s elite 3-point shooting will test Georgia’s struggling defense, especially if the Bulldogs remain shorthanded. If Missouri gets hot from deep early, Georgia will have a tough time keeping up.
