Georgia Tech Finding Its Groove as Slumping Cal Awaits

Georgia Tech looks to keep rolling Saturday as it hosts a struggling California team in an ACC showdown in Atlanta.

Georgia Tech Turning the Corner

After a 3-7 start in ACC play, the Yellow Jackets (12-13, 6-8 ACC) have won three of their last four games, including a 60-52 wire-to-wire victory over Stanford on Wednesday. With just three weeks left in the regular season, Georgia Tech appears to be hitting its stride at the right time.

“I’m seeing a different type of energy from our group,” Georgia Tech coach Damon Stoudamire said. “Our guys have been fighting hard, and we’re starting to get a little bit of payback.”

Naithan George has been a key factor in the turnaround. The sophomore guard led the team with 22 points, seven rebounds, and five assists against Stanford, continuing his strong stretch of play. Over the last five games, George is averaging 21 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.

With injuries mounting, including to leading scorer Lance Terry (14.9 PPG) and guard Javian McCollum (12.2 PPG), George has logged heavy minutes, averaging nearly 38 minutes per game in ACC play.

“(George) had another 40-minute game, but he played really well and controlled things for us,” Stoudamire said. “He did a good job scoring the ball, he rebounded, got us organized, but it was really a collective effort.”

Cal Struggling to Find Answers

On the other side, California (12-13, 5-9 ACC) has dropped four of its last five games, including back-to-back losses to Wake Forest and No. 3 Duke. The Golden Bears couldn’t keep up with Duke on Wednesday, falling 78-57.

Andrej Stojakovic has led Cal offensively this season with 17.5 PPG, but he has struggled recently, averaging just 8.4 points per game over his last five contests.

Freshman guard Jeremiah Wilkinson has stepped up in recent games, scoring 21 points in back-to-back contests.

“It’s impressive to have that level of poise and composure as a freshman,” Cal coach Mark Madsen said of Wilkinson. “To be able to run the offense against one of the top defenses in the country in Duke, Jeremiah is a tremendous leader and a phenomenal basketball player.”

Wilkinson (14.0 PPG) and Jovan Blacksher Jr. (11.0 PPG) round out the top scorers for Cal.

Who Has the Edge?

This is the first meeting between Georgia Tech and Cal since 2012, when the Golden Bears won 68-57. But with Georgia Tech surging and Cal struggling to find consistency, the Yellow Jackets have a golden opportunity to keep their momentum rolling.
