Iowa Looks for Answers Against Penn State
The Iowa Hawkeyes are in search of a turnaround as they welcome Penn State to Iowa City on Friday. After a tough stretch of games, both teams have something to prove in this Big Ten showdown.
Iowa’s Troubles on Both Ends
Iowa (12-7, 3-5 Big Ten) has seen its promising form falter with three consecutive losses, dropping from five wins in six games to a team struggling to find consistency. Defensive lapses during their California road trip resulted in back-to-back blowout losses to USC and UCLA, where the Hawkeyes gave up 99 and 94 points, respectively.
Returning home didn’t provide the boost Iowa needed, as they fell 72-67 to Minnesota on Tuesday. A slow start, scoring just 28 points in the first half, and a dismal 3-for-21 performance from beyond the arc sealed their fate.
“We quick-shot the ball again when we got behind,” coach Fran McCaffery admitted. “I would have preferred to see a little more ball movement, like we saw at the end.”
Despite the loss, Owen Freeman and Payton Sandfort were bright spots for the Hawkeyes. Both scored 21 points, with Sandfort adding 10 rebounds to register his first double-double since the season opener.
Penn State Brings Offensive Firepower
The Nittany Lions (13-6, 3-5 Big Ten) have excelled offensively this season, averaging an impressive 84.2 points per game, which ranks 17th nationally. However, defensive struggles have been a persistent issue.
A four-game losing streak highlighted their defensive vulnerability, with Penn State allowing an average of 85 points during that stretch. They snapped the skid with an 80-72 victory over Rutgers on Monday, a win coach Mike Rhoades believes shows their resilience in close games.
“The fun of being in a close game is figuring out how to help your team win,” Rhoades said. “We’ve had some tough losses, but if we play the right way, we’ll be in position to win more of these tight games.”
Ace Baldwin Jr., who scored 22 points in the win over Rutgers, leads Penn State with 14.7 points per game. The Nittany Lions boast a balanced scoring attack, with Nick Kern Jr. (12.6 ppg), Yanic Konan Niederhauser (12.4 ppg), and Zach Hicks (12.1 ppg) providing consistent contributions.
Key Matchup to Watch
This game marks the only meeting between the two teams this season, and both are looking for momentum in a crowded Big Ten. Iowa’s ability to rediscover its offensive rhythm and avoid costly defensive lapses will be critical. On the other hand, Penn State will aim to exploit their offensive efficiency while tightening up on defense.
As Iowa fights to end their slump and Penn State looks to build on their latest victory, fans can expect an intense battle in Iowa City.
