No. 25 Ole Miss Looks to Limit Turnovers Again in Encounter vs. LSU

The Ole Miss Rebels have made taking care of the basketball a priority this season, and it’s a key reason why they are ranked No. 25 heading into their Saturday night matchup against the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge.

Can Ole Miss Stay Sharp and Keep Its Hot Streak Going?

Ole Miss (17-6, 6-4 SEC) is tied with Marquette for the fewest turnovers per game in Division I at just 8.9. That discipline was on full display in Tuesday’s 98-84 home win over No. 14 Kentucky, where the Rebels recorded an incredible 24-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

“Just one loose ball-handling play away from doing something that I’ve chased in my career,” Rebels coach Chris Beard said. “I’ve always thought it would be cool to coach a team that had zero turnovers in a game.”

The lone turnover came from Sean Pedulla, but his eight assists and team-leading 14.9 points per game more than made up for it.

Matthew Murrell, who has battled lower-body injuries this season, had a breakout performance against Kentucky, scoring 24 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range. Meanwhile, Jaylen Murray recorded a 15-point, 10-assist double-double as Ole Miss shot 54.7% from the field and drained 13 of 30 three-pointers.

LSU Struggling to Find Answers

LSU (12-10, 1-8 SEC) has dropped five straight games, most recently falling 81-62 to Georgia on Wednesday. While the Tigers made 12 three-pointers in that loss, it wasn’t nearly enough to compensate for their struggles inside.

“Just absolutely annihilated on the glass,” Tigers coach Matt McMahon said. “The rebounding, the points in the paint, and the two-point percentages were clearly the difference in the game.”

LSU has had issues with turnovers all season, averaging 14.2 per game—ranking 324th in Division I. That was a major factor in their 77-65 loss to Ole Miss on Jan. 11, when they committed 16 turnovers.

Cam Carter leads the Tigers in scoring at 17.0 points per game, but he struggled against Georgia, finishing with just 10 points on 2-of-7 shooting. Jordan Sears, a transfer from UT Martin, is averaging 13.8 points but has shot just 38.6% from the field.

Will Ole Miss Continue Its Dominance Over LSU?

LSU leads the all-time series 127-91, but Ole Miss has won three of the last four meetings. If the Rebels can continue to protect the ball and take advantage of LSU’s weaknesses, they could extend that success on Saturday.
