Tom Izzo Aims for Big Ten Wins Record as No. 11 Michigan State Faces Indiana
Indiana is in must-win mode, but pulling off an upset in East Lansing won’t be easy—especially when Michigan State‘s Tom Izzo is on the brink of history.
With 353 Big Ten wins, Izzo is tied with the legendary Bob Knight for the most conference victories in history. On Tuesday night, as No. 11 Michigan State (19-4, 10-2 Big Ten) hosts Indiana (14-10, 5-8 Big Ten), he has a chance to claim the record outright.
Indiana’s Season on the Brink
For Indiana, things are spiraling. A five-game losing streak has put their NCAA Tournament hopes in serious jeopardy. If they don’t turn things around soon, they could miss out on the Big Ten tournament altogether.
The latest blow came in a 70-67 loss to Michigan on Saturday, where the Hoosiers erased an 18-point deficit but couldn’t close the deal.
“We’ve got to start winning some games here soon,” coach Mike Woodson admitted.
Making matters worse, Woodson and the university announced he won’t return next season, leaving the program in flux.
Still, Mackenzie Mgbako showed promise with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Michigan. But leading scorer Oumar Ballo (13.7 PPG, 9.6 RPG) has struggled, totaling just 10 points and 10 rebounds over the last two games.
Michigan State Chasing Big Ten Supremacy
Unlike Indiana, Michigan State is riding high after an 86-74 comeback win over Oregon. Trailing by 14 at halftime, the Spartans stormed back, led by Jase Richardson’s season-high 29 points.
“We can’t drop any more games,” center Carson Cooper said. “For us, it was a must-win.”
Michigan State is locked in a tight race for first place in the Big Ten, battling Purdue and Michigan.
A win Tuesday wouldn’t just cement Izzo’s place in history—it would also keep the Spartans in the hunt for a top seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
Izzo Reflects on His Historic Moment
Izzo was quick to deflect credit for the milestone, instead praising the players who have helped him win along the way.
