UNC Has Eye on ACC Tourney Seed Against Reeling Miami

With three games left in the regular season, North Carolina is in position to secure a top-four seed in the ACC Tournament and strengthen its NCAA Tournament resume. The Tar Heels (18-11, 11-6 ACC) will look to continue their hot streak on Saturday when they host struggling Miami (6-22, 2-15) in Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina Peaking at the Right Time

The Tar Heels have turned things around since a 20-point loss to then-No. 23 Clemson on Feb. 10, winning four straight games in dominant fashion. During this stretch, UNC has controlled games from start to finish, trailing for just over five minutes total.

A major factor in their success has been their dominance on the glass. In their last three games, North Carolina has outrebounded opponents 110-63, including a staggering 38-14 advantage on the offensive boards. That has led to a 62-21 edge in second-chance points.

“It has allowed us to be more efficient on the offensive end,” UNC coach Hubert Davis said. “We’re getting more cracks at it, and not only are we getting more offensive rebounds, we’re converting them. When you can do that, that’s huge for us offensively.”

Jae’Lyn Withers has stepped up during this run, averaging 13.5 points per game while shooting 65.4% from the field, including 10-of-16 from beyond the arc. Ven-Allen Lubin has also found his groove, posting 12.3 points per game on 68.2% shooting over the last three contests.

Miami Struggling to Find Answers

The Hurricanes have dropped four straight games and are on pace for one of the worst seasons in program history. With just two more losses, Miami would match its single-season record for defeats (24), set during the 1991-92 campaign.

Injuries have plagued the Hurricanes, with leading scorer Matthew Cleveland (16.3 ppg) missing the last two games due to an ankle injury. Miami has already been without Nijel Pack (13.9 ppg) since December because of a foot injury, leaving the team short on veteran leadership.

“We’re really in a situation where guys have to step up because, again, we haven’t had Nijel since December and now Matt’s missed the last two games,” Miami interim coach Bill Courtney said. “They were the most veteran guys on our team.”

Despite their struggles, Miami has seen promising performances from Lynn Kidd, who has averaged 15.8 points on 75.8% shooting in the last four games. AJ Staton-McCray has also stepped up, scoring 21 points against Virginia Tech last Saturday.
