Northwestern Hopes Hot Streak Continues vs. Northeastern
Northwestern aims to extend its three-game winning streak on Sunday as it hosts Northeastern in Evanston, Ill. The Wildcats (9-3) have found success recently, particularly against power conference teams, thanks to strong defensive pressure and improved ball handling.
Northwestern’s Defensive Dominance
During its current streak, Northwestern has excelled in creating turnovers and converting them into points. Over the three wins, including an overtime upset of then-No. 19 Illinois, the Wildcats have forced 45 turnovers while committing just 18. This has resulted in a decisive 43-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
“That’s something we’ve really talked about as a team,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said after an 84-64 victory over DePaul on Dec. 21. “We’re a really good defensive team and we need to turn some of those live-ball turnovers, so points can come a little easier.”
Brooks Barnhizer has been a standout, averaging 19.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.3 steals, 3.3 assists, and 2.7 blocks during the streak. Nick Martinelli has also shined, using his versatile skill set to average 22 points per game over the same stretch while shooting an impressive 56 percent from 3-point range this season.
Northeastern’s Strong Start
Northeastern (8-4) is off to its best start since the 2015-16 season under veteran coach Bill Coen. With an all-junior starting lineup, the Huskies bring a mix of experience and athleticism.
Guards Rashad King and Harold Woods lead the way, combining for nearly 32 points and 15 rebounds per game. Woods, in particular, has impressed with his rebounding prowess despite being a perimeter player.
“He hunts for those offensive rebounds and the tight spaces where he can finish behind the defense,” Coen said. “And he works on that daily.”
This game represents the Huskies’ lone matchup against a power conference opponent this season. Under Coen, Northeastern has pulled off nine victories against major conference teams, making them no strangers to such challenges.
Key Matchup
The battle between Northwestern’s defensive intensity and Northeastern’s experienced backcourt will be pivotal. Northwestern will look to maintain its turnover advantage and capitalize on its ability to convert mistakes into easy points. Northeastern’s success will hinge on limiting turnovers and leveraging its rebounding edge from players like Woods and King.
