Boston College Aims to Extend Notre Dame’s Struggles
Boston College will look to add to Notre Dame’s woes when the two teams clash in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Monday night in South Bend, Ind. The Eagles (9-7, 1-4 ACC) are hoping to bounce back from recent struggles of their own while Notre Dame (7-9, 1-4) tries to snap a four-game losing streak.
Boston College’s Road Struggles
The Eagles have found little success in true road games this season, dropping both contests — a 72-66 loss at Wake Forest and an 85-64 defeat at Georgia Tech. In both games, Boston College failed to shoot better than 42.4 percent from the field, a trend that will need to change if they hope to secure a win at Notre Dame.
Following their loss to Georgia Tech, the Eagles faltered again at home Saturday, falling 79-71 to Syracuse. Despite committing just six turnovers, Boston College struggled from beyond the arc (4-of-16) and at the free-throw line (13-of-20).
“We did many things right,” Boston College coach Earl Grant said after the game. “But it’s a margin game, and it’s a possession game, and it’s a small margin.”
The Eagles will continue to lean on Donald Hand Jr., who leads the team with 14.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Hand bounced back from two subpar performances with 20 points and nine rebounds against Syracuse, and his production will be crucial against Notre Dame.
Notre Dame’s Recent Close Calls
The Fighting Irish have lost nine of their past 12 games, but they have shown flashes of competitiveness during their current four-game skid. After a pair of one-point losses, Notre Dame pushed No. 4 Duke on Saturday, cutting a 14-0 early deficit to just four points in the final minute before falling 86-78.
Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry praised his team’s ability to adapt and fight back.
“For us to be able to go from game to game and be able to change some different stuff is a credit to our guys,” Shrewsberry said.
The Irish remain anchored by Markus Burton, who leads the team with 18.9 points per game. Burton scored 23 points against Duke and has been a consistent offensive threat, shooting 46.3 percent this season. In two games against Boston College last season, Burton tallied 29 points on 13-of-26 shooting.
