Notre Dame, Virginia Tech Out to Get on Solid Footing

The Virginia Tech Hokies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish find themselves battling for positioning in the ACC as they face off in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday. With both teams hovering near the bottom of the standings, securing a win is crucial to staying in contention for the conference tournament.

Can Virginia Tech Turn Effort Into Wins?

Virginia Tech (10-13, 5-7 ACC) has shown flashes of strong play recently, including back-to-back wins against Florida State and Virginia. However, the Hokies couldn’t keep the momentum going in an 81-75 home loss to SMU on Wednesday.

Despite the setback, head coach Mike Young remains optimistic.

“They’re playing really hard and trying to do everything we give them to put ourselves into position to win every night,” Young said. “I know this: I’ve got a good team. I’ve got a team that’s getting better and better.”

Fifth-year big man Mylyjael Poteat stepped up against SMU, recording 15 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high-tying five assists. His strong performance was much needed, as leading scorer Tobi Lawal (12.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg) had a quiet night, scoring just nine points while missing all five of his three-point attempts.

Notre Dame Looking to Take Advantage of Home Stretch

Notre Dame (10-12, 4-7 ACC) has struggled with a tough schedule, playing seven of its last ten games on the road. The Fighting Irish lost close contests at Miami and Florida State last week but now return home, where six of their final nine regular-season games will be played.

Head coach Micah Shrewsberry is hoping for the return of point guard Matt Allocco (wrist), who sat out Tuesday’s 67-60 loss at Florida State.

“We were at Miami and guys got banged up. It’s just a short turnaround to get back and get ready,” Shrewsberry said.

Without Allocco, freshman Sir Mohammed made his first career start but struggled, missing all seven of his shots and finishing with just one point.

Markus Burton has carried the scoring load since returning from a knee injury, averaging 22.0 points per game. Tae Davis (15.5 ppg) and Braeden Shrewsberry (14.3 ppg) have also been key contributors for the Irish.
