On Hot Stretch, Nebraska Clashes With Reeling Penn State
Nebraska is riding a 5-1 surge, pushing toward an NCAA Tournament berth, while Penn State is desperate to snap a seven-game losing streak. The two teams meet Wednesday in University Park, Pa., in a Big Ten showdown with contrasting momentum.
Nebraska Keeps Rolling Toward March
The Cornhuskers (17-9, 7-8 Big Ten) have proven they can handle elite competition, collecting four ranked wins this season, including back-to-back victories over then-No. 18 Illinois and then-No. 16 Oregon.

On Sunday, Nebraska pulled off an incredible comeback, rallying from a 20-point deficit to stun Northwestern 68-64 on the road. Leading scorer Brice Williams (19.5 PPG) took over in the second half, scoring 15 of his 21 points after intermission, while Juwan Gary (17 points) played a crucial role down the stretch.
“As I told the guys after the game, it just goes to show you what we’re capable of when we play the right way, when we play with an edge,” Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg said.
Hoiberg also praised center Braxton Meah (10 points, seven rebounds) for his impact, a much-needed boost after he totaled just nine points and 14 rebounds in his previous six games combined.

Penn State’s Struggles Continue
The Nittany Lions (13-13, 3-12 Big Ten) have been spiraling, losing seven straight and 11 of their last 12. Defense has been a major issue, as they have allowed at least 75 points in six of their last seven losses.
Penn State showed fight in its last game but ultimately fell 75-73 to Washington. Ace Baldwin Jr. (14.0 PPG) led the way with 20 points, eight assists, and six steals, while Yanic Konan Niederhauser (10 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks) provided a strong presence inside.
“There’s only so many opportunities in your life you get to put on a uniform in any sport,” Penn State coach Mike Rhoades said. “We have (five) games left here. Let’s put them on with pride.”
Key Matchups to Watch
- Brice Williams (Nebraska) vs. Penn State’s Perimeter Defense – Williams has been on fire and could exploit a Penn State team that struggles to defend the three.
- Ace Baldwin Jr. (Penn State) vs. Nebraska’s Backcourt – Baldwin is Penn State’s best offensive weapon and must create offense for himself and his teammates.
- Braxton Meah (Nebraska) vs. Penn State’s Interior Defense – Meah is coming off a solid game, and Nebraska will need him to be a force in the paint.
“We need to take advantage of our opportunities,” Rhoades emphasized. “Each game is another chance to show what we’re about.”
Can Nebraska Keep Building Its Tournament Resume?
With momentum on their side, the Cornhuskers look to stay hot and boost their NCAA Tournament chances. Meanwhile, Penn State is desperate to salvage its season and snap its seven-game skid.
