UCLA and No. 20 Purdue Face Off in Key Big Ten Battle
Two programs forever linked by the legendary John Wooden will square off on Friday night as No. 20 Purdue hosts UCLA in a pivotal Big Ten Conference showdown. The Boilermakers, Wooden’s alma mater, and the Bruins, the team he led to 10 national championships, meet as conference opponents for the first time.
Beyond the historic connection, this matchup carries major implications for Big Ten tournament seeding. Both teams enter the game tied for fourth place at 11-6 in conference play, with a top-four finish securing an automatic bye into the quarterfinals of the tournament, which begins March 12 in Indianapolis.
For Purdue, the game is about halting a four-game losing streak before it spirals further. For UCLA, it’s a chance to keep climbing after a recent bounce-back win.
Purdue Searching for Answers Amid Late-Season Struggles
Just a few weeks ago, Purdue looked like a top contender in the Big Ten. Now, the Boilermakers are trying to avoid a complete collapse.
Their latest setback, a 73-58 loss to rival Indiana, marked their fourth straight defeat. Purdue led by 12 points at halftime, only to watch the game slip away with a disastrous second-half performance.
Guard Fletcher Loyer described the loss as another game where “small, minor mistakes just let it snowball from there.”

The losing streak has included losses to Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State, all Top 25 teams, further exposing Purdue’s struggles against high-level competition.
One of the biggest concerns has been Braden Smith, the team’s star combo guard who is averaging 15.8 points and 8.7 assists per game. While he has been one of the top facilitators in the country, his recent performances have been underwhelming.
- Scored just six points vs. Wisconsin and eight against Indiana
- Matched his season high for turnovers with six in each of the last two games
Purdue’s leading scorer, Trey Kaufman-Renn (19.2 PPG), will need to step up once again, but the Boilermakers must also find a way to tighten up their defense and avoid costly mistakes down the stretch.
UCLA Finding Its Footing After Midseason Slip
The Bruins also had their own slip-up earlier this month when they suffered a stunning 64-61 home loss to Minnesota. But unlike Purdue, UCLA bounced back quickly, defeating Ohio State 69-61 in its last game.
Head coach Mick Cronin was relieved to get the win, emphasizing that at this stage of the season, every victory matters.
“All wins are good wins (in) late February,” Cronin said.

A major factor in the victory was Eric Dailey Jr., who led the team with 20 points. It was a significant step forward for Dailey, who had failed to reach double figures in five straight games.
“Eric’s got toughness,” Cronin said. “Eric works unbelievably hard; he’s the hardest practicer every day. He’s got mental toughness, he’s not mentally soft, so things don’t bother him.”
Dailey is also a key piece in UCLA’s elite defense, which allows just 64.6 points per game, ranking No. 23 nationally. Along with Skyy Clark and Kobe Johnson, who leads the team in rebounds (6.0 RPG) and steals (1.8 SPG), the Bruins will look to disrupt Purdue’s offense and make life difficult for Smith and Kaufman-Renn.
Key Matchup: Braden Smith vs. Kobe Johnson
One of the most intriguing battles will be between Purdue’s Braden Smith and UCLA’s Kobe Johnson. Smith is an elite playmaker, ranking second in the nation in assists (8.7 APG), but his recent turnover issues could be a major problem against Johnson, who averages nearly two steals per game.
If Johnson can pressure Smith into mistakes, Purdue’s offensive rhythm could break down, giving UCLA an edge.
What’s at Stake?
This game is crucial for both teams as they fight for Big Ten tournament seeding.
For Purdue, it’s about stopping the bleeding. A fifth straight loss would all but eliminate them from top-three contention in the Big Ten, forcing them into a tougher tournament path.
For UCLA, it’s a chance to separate themselves from the pack and keep climbing in the standings. A road win over a ranked Purdue team would bolster their confidence heading into March.
With history, high stakes, and a desperate Purdue team looking to snap its losing streak, this matchup has all the makings of a thrilling showdown. Can UCLA continue its momentum, or will Purdue finally stop its slide? The battle tips off Friday night in West Lafayette.
