No. 25 Utah State Takes Win Streak on Road vs. San Jose State
Utah State, now ranked No. 25 under first-year head coach Jerrod Calhoun, looks to extend its winning streak when it visits San Jose State on Tuesday night. This is the third time in program history that Utah State has climbed into the national rankings under a first-year head coach, a feat previously achieved by Danny Sprinkle in 2023-24 and Craig Smith in 2018-19.
Aggies Riding High
Utah State (14-1, 4-0 Mountain West) is enjoying its 11th season in the Associated Press Top 25 and boasts an impressive 77-25 record when ranked. The Aggies are unbeaten in conference play and have won four straight games overall, including three on the road.
Their lone setback came in a narrow 75-73 home loss to UC San Diego, but the team rebounded with resilience, earning gritty road victories against Saint Mary’s (75-68), then-No. 20 San Diego State (67-66), and Nevada (69-64) on New Year’s Eve.
“I give our guys a ton of credit to go on the road and win at Saint Mary’s, San Diego State, and now Nevada,” Calhoun said after the Nevada game. “We have real toughness and can win in a variety of ways.”
Offensive Threats
The Aggies are led offensively by Ian Martinez, who averages 16.9 points per game, and Mason Falslev, close behind with 16.8. Falslev has been a key all-around contributor, leading the team in rebounds (6.3 per game) while also averaging 3.4 assists, 2.7 steals, and shooting 53.6 percent from the field, including 45.5 percent from 3-point range.
Familiar Faces in San Jose
Utah State will face a familiar challenge in former Aggie Josh Uduje, who transferred to San Jose State after earning co-Sixth Man of the Year honors in the Mountain West last season. Uduje has been a bright spot for the Spartans (7-9, 0-4), leading the team with 17.2 points per game. He has scored at least 20 points in eight games this season and has reached double figures in 13 of 16 contests.
Uduje tallied 18 points in San Jose State’s 79-73 loss to UNLV on Saturday, a game where the Spartans rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to make it competitive.

San Jose State’s Struggles
The Spartans have opened Mountain West play with four consecutive losses, but head coach Tim Miles sees positives in the team’s effort.
“I thought our guys really rallied and stuck together in the second half,” Miles said after the UNLV loss. “In the end, we just didn’t get quite enough stops to get over the top. There’s a true lesson to be learned in sticking together.”
Matchup Outlook
While Utah State has demonstrated its ability to win tough road games, San Jose State will look to lean on Uduje and the lessons from their recent losses to challenge the Aggies. Utah State’s balanced offense and defensive toughness make them the favorites, but the Spartans’ grit could make for an intriguing contest.
