Road Woes Haunting North Carolina as It Visits Syracuse

North Carolina will try to end a four-game road losing streak when it takes on Syracuse in ACC action Saturday.

Tar Heels Struggling Away from Home

The Tar Heels (14-11, 7-6 ACC) have lost five of their last seven games, with road defeats coming against Wake Forest, Pitt, Duke, and Clemson. Their most recent losses to Duke and Clemson came by a combined 37 points, raising concerns about their ability to compete on the road.

Monday’s 85-65 loss to No. 23 Clemson showcased North Carolina’s offensive struggles. RJ Davis led the way with 18 points, but he was one of the few bright spots. Davis made 2 of 5 three-point attempts, while the rest of the team shot just 2-of-14 from deep.

“I just think (Clemson was) the better team tonight,” Davis said. “They were the more hungry team, and they played like they wanted it more than us. … That’s just the frustrating part about it. We just can’t get over that hump and continue to show that we want it more.”

North Carolina will need to find its hunger on the road, especially after splitting last season’s meetings with Syracuse. The Tar Heels dominated the Orange 103-67 in Chapel Hill but fell 86-79 in Syracuse a month later.

Syracuse Desperate to Reverse Skid

The Orange (11-14, 5-9 ACC) are also struggling, having lost five of their last seven games. In their most recent outing, they fell 91-84 to Miami despite 47 combined points from J.J. Starling (25) and Eddie Lampkin Jr. (22).

“He was aggressive. Eddie plays hard. That’s the one thing he does every game. He brings it,” Syracuse coach Adrian Autry said of Lampkin.

However, Syracuse needs more from its supporting cast. The other three starters combined for just eight points against Miami, and Starling continues to struggle from deep, failing to shoot better than 33.3% from three in his last five games.

Can North Carolina Find Bench Production?

The Tar Heels also need a boost from their reserves. North Carolina’s bench combined for just 11 points on 4-of-18 shooting against Clemson, and their lack of depth has been an issue in recent road games.

North Carolina leads the all-time series with Syracuse 17-7, but the Orange will be eager to exploit the Tar Heels’ road struggles and secure another home win.
