Wolverines Battle Through Grueling Stretch
No. 5 seed Michigan (26-9) heads into its fifth high-stakes game in just over a week when it meets No. 4 seed Texas A&M (23-10) in the NCAA Tournament’s South Region.
The Wolverines survived a 68-65 scare against UC San Diego on Thursday, barely holding on after surrendering a 15-point lead. It followed a taxing run through the Big Ten Tournament, and head coach Dusty May acknowledged the toll of the recent stretch.
“The mental component, the emotional fatigue of playing in one-possession games… it’s tough,” May said. “But we’ve found a good rhythm.”
Big man Vladislav Goldin, Michigan’s leading scorer at 16.6 points per game, was limited by foul trouble but hit two clutch free throws in the final seconds. Fellow 7-footer Danny Wolf came up big defensively, helping seal the win.
Aggies Bring Fresh Legs, Physical Edge
Texas A&M cruised through its opener and enters the second round on more rest. Led by guards Wade Taylor IV (15.7 ppg) and Zhuric Phelps (13.8 ppg), the Aggies emphasize physical defense and are relentless on the boards — especially on offense, where they lead the nation with 16.0 offensive rebounds per game.
Michigan will need to match that intensity despite tired legs.
“It’s obviously point No. 1 on the scouting report,” May said of A&M’s rebounding. “There’s a heightened awareness to fix it or you’re going home.”
Texas A&M also thrives on pressure defense, and guard Manny Obaseki pointed to Michigan’s turnover tendencies as a key factor.
“We know they turn the ball over a lot; we plan to capitalize off that,” Obaseki said. “We’ve just got to stay true to what we do.”

Key Matchups and Trends
While the teams haven’t met this season, they share seven common opponents. The Aggies went 7-1 in those games, while Michigan went 5-4 — giving both coaching staffs valuable tape.
The size advantage favors Michigan, but A&M’s depth and rebounding edge could tilt the balance. The battle between Michigan’s twin towers and A&M’s aggressive guard play may decide who advances to the Sweet 16.
