Kentucky Faces Texas in Key SEC Matchup, Both Teams Battling Injuries
The No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats travel to Austin on Saturday to take on the Texas Longhorns, with both teams dealing with key injuries heading into this SEC showdown. Kentucky (17-7, 6-5 SEC) is coming off a statement win over No. 5 Tennessee, completing a season sweep of the Volunteers with a 75-64 victory on Tuesday. The Wildcats closed the game on a 20-6 run, showing their late-game composure in front of a home crowd. Meanwhile, Texas (15-10, 4-8 SEC) is reeling after a 103-80 blowout loss to No. 2 Alabama. The Longhorns have dropped three straight and are desperately searching for a win to revive their NCAA Tournament hopes.
Kentucky’s Depth Being Tested
The Wildcats could be missing two key players on Saturday:
- Jaxson Robinson (13.3 PPG, wrist injury) – Missed the Tennessee game and remains day-to-day.
- Lamont Butler (shoulder injury) – Injured late against Tennessee, status uncertain.
Coach Mark Pope acknowledged that the team is taking it day by day but is counting on younger players to step up.
“This is the part of the season where our young guys kind of have to become sophomores a little bit,” Pope said. “Our roster issues are forcing them to do it, and they’re ready.”
Against Tennessee, Ansley Almonor and Otega Oweh led the way with 13 points each, while Koby Brea and Trent Noah added 11 apiece. If Robinson and Butler remain out, Kentucky will need another balanced offensive effort to handle Texas on the road.
Texas Fighting for Its Tournament Life
The Longhorns’ inconsistency has been a season-long issue, and the loss to Alabama only intensified pressure on coach Rodney Terry.
Freshman guard Tre Johnson (SEC-leading 19.3 PPG) scored 24 points against the Crimson Tide, but Texas struggled elsewhere, shooting just 42% and getting out-rebounded 41-25.
Texas has played without energy spark Chendall Weaver (hip) for the past 10 games, and against Alabama, they lost second-leading scorer Arthur Kaluma (12.9 PPG) to a left knee injury. Both players’ statuses remain uncertain ahead of Saturday’s game.
Terry, however, isn’t letting the outside noise distract him.

What’s at Stake?
For Kentucky, a third straight win would solidify its momentum heading into March. For Texas, a victory over a ranked opponent could be a crucial boost in its bid to stay in the NCAA Tournament conversation.
With both teams potentially missing key players, which squad will step up under pressure? Tip-off is set for Saturday in Austin.
