Texas Awaits Return of Tre Johnson, Prepares for New Orleans
The Texas Longhorns gear up to host the New Orleans Privateers while managing the absence of star freshman Tre Johnson.
Longhorns Dominating in Non-Conference Play
The Texas Longhorns (9-2) have been unstoppable against mid-major opponents this season, winning their seven games against such teams by an average margin of nearly 35 points. Despite Tre Johnson’s absence due to a right hip injury, the Longhorns showed no signs of slowing down in their 121-57 rout of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday.
In that game, Texas set season highs in points, field goals made (44), field goals attempted (70), 3-pointers made (17), and assists (28). Eight Longhorns scored in double figures, with reserve Nic Codie leading the charge with a career-high 20 points.
Though Johnson, who leads the team and the SEC in scoring at 19.9 points per game, was sidelined, Texas head coach Rodney Terry expressed confidence in the freshman’s recovery.
“Tre could have played Sunday if it was a conference opponent,” Terry said. “He’s still learning how to manage recovery and take care of his body, but he’ll be back in the lineup soon.”
Johnson’s ability to score efficiently—shooting 43.3 percent from beyond the arc and averaging 2.9 made 3-pointers per game—has been key to the Longhorns’ early-season success. However, his absence against New Orleans is unlikely to disrupt Texas’ dominance, particularly given the team’s depth and balanced scoring.
New Orleans Struggling to Find Consistency
The New Orleans Privateers (2-7) come into Thursday’s matchup on a three-game losing streak, including a 104-57 defeat at Iowa on Sunday. James White was a bright spot for the Privateers, scoring 24 points, while MJ Thomas added 14.
New Orleans has struggled mightily this season, being outscored by an average of 16.1 points per game. The Privateers have shot just 39.2 percent from the field and have had difficulty containing opponents’ offensive firepower.
James White has been a standout for New Orleans, averaging 19.1 points per game. However, he will need significant support from his teammates to challenge a Texas team that excels at both ends of the floor.

Key Matchup
Thursday’s game presents a stark contrast in form and momentum. Texas, even without Johnson, boasts a deep roster with multiple scoring options and a defense that thrives on creating turnovers and limiting opportunities.
For New Orleans, containing Texas’ shooters and finding consistent offensive contributions beyond White will be critical. The Privateers will need to play their best game of the season to avoid being overwhelmed by the Longhorns’ talent and depth.
Historical Context
This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs, with New Orleans holding a surprising 2-1 advantage in the series. However, the most recent matchup in 2003 saw Texas secure a victory, and the Longhorns are heavy favorites to even the series on Thursday.
