Sliding Arizona State Meets No. 12 Texas Tech’s Tested Defense
Arizona State looks to snap a three-game losing streak as it visits No. 12 Texas Tech on Saturday in a tough Big 12 showdown in Lubbock, Texas.
Arizona State Facing Tough Road Test
The Sun Devils (12-11, 3-9 Big 12) are struggling, and their 86-73 loss at Oklahoma State last weekend only added to their woes. To make matters worse, freshman forward Jayden Quaintance—one of the team’s best defenders—is out indefinitely after suffering an ankle injury in that game.

“Feel awful for Jayden,” Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said. “There was quite a bit of swelling in there… he’s going to be out for a period of time now.”
Quaintance, a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year candidate, leads the team in blocked shots (2.8 per game) and rebounds (8.2 per game), making his absence a major blow.
BJ Freeman (12.9 ppg), Basheer Jihad (12.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg), and Alston Mason (12.3 ppg, 3.6 apg) will need to step up, with Mason coming off a season-high 25-point effort against Oklahoma State.
Texas Tech’s Stifling Defense Key to Success
The Red Raiders (18-5, 9-3 Big 12) are having their best conference start in program history, thanks to a top-tier defense that allows just 65.9 points per game (38th in the nation). Opponents are shooting just 41.5 percent from the field against Texas Tech, which also forces 12.8 turnovers per contest.
Balanced scoring has also fueled the Red Raiders’ success, with five players averaging at least 9.5 points per game.
“You’re in one-game seasons,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “Our team has always responded well when adverse times come. You can’t get distracted by results.”
JT Toppin (15.2 ppg, 8.6 rpg) leads the team with 20 career double-doubles, while Darrion Williams (14.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.0 apg) and Chance McMillian (15.2 ppg) add offensive firepower.
Big 12 Standings and Tournament Implications
Texas Tech sits just two losses behind No. 6 Houston and No. 13 Arizona in the Big 12 standings. With eight regular-season games left—including a rematch against Houston and a road trip to No. 17 Kansas—the Red Raiders are aiming for a top NCAA Tournament seed.
Can Arizona State Keep Up with Texas Tech’s Elite Defense?
With Arizona State missing its top rim protector and Texas Tech thriving on defensive intensity, this matchup could prove to be a tough one for the Sun Devils. Will the Red Raiders continue their dominance, or can ASU pull off the upset?
