No. 20 Marquette Shoots for Revenge Against UConn
With major implications in the Big East standings, No. 20 Marquette will look to avenge an earlier loss when it visits UConn on Wednesday night in Storrs, Conn.
Marquette Aiming to Stay Hot
The Golden Eagles (22-7, 13-5 Big East) have won two straight, cruising past Providence at home before taking down Georgetown 76-61 on the road Saturday.

Kam Jones, Marquette’s leading scorer, had an off night with 13 points but dished out a season-high 13 assists, showcasing his ability to impact the game in other ways.
“He came into the year with people thinking of him as a shooting guard,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “What he’s doing passing the ball, on a night where he went 0-for-5 from three … the fact that he can be a threat and have almost double-digit assists in a half is pretty powerful.”
Jones leads Marquette with 18.4 points and 6.2 assists per game, while David Joplin grabs a team-high 5.3 rebounds. Stevie Mitchell remains one of the nation’s best defensive guards, averaging 2.4 steals per contest.
UConn Peaking at the Right Time
UConn (20-9, 12-6) has also won back-to-back games, defeating Georgetown 93-79 at home before a 75-63 road win over Providence. Head coach Dan Hurley sees his team improving in key areas as tournament play approaches.
“When our defensive rebounding sucked, we shot the heck out of the ball. Then our rebounding improved but our shooting turned to crap,” Hurley said. “It feels like maybe the last two games … the shooting is coming back and the rebounding is improving.”
Solo Ball leads the Huskies in scoring at 14.9 points per game, Hassan Diarra averages six assists and 1.5 steals, while Tarris Reed Jr. controls the paint with 7.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.
Seeking Payback
The last meeting between these teams was a frustrating one for Marquette. On “National Marquette Day” in front of a record home crowd, UConn jumped out to a 22-point first-half lead and held off multiple rallies to win 77-69.
Ball had a career-high 25 points, hitting seven of nine from three-point range. Jones led Marquette with 22 points, while Chase Ross contributed 19.
One positive for the Golden Eagles was their defensive pressure. They forced UConn into 25 turnovers, leading to 29 points. However, the Huskies’ lights-out shooting—12-for-19 (63.2%) from deep—proved too much to overcome.
Adding to the challenge, UConn will have Liam McNeeley this time around. The freshman did not play in the first meeting but has been on fire since returning on Feb. 7, averaging 18.9 points and 7.4 rebounds over seven games.
UConn has won the last four games in this rivalry, sweeping last year’s regular-season meetings before defeating Marquette in the Big East championship game. The year prior, Marquette won two of three, including a semifinal victory en route to its own Big East title.
