Syracuse Looks to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive vs. Virginia Tech

Syracuse breathed new life into its ACC Tournament hopes with a win over NC State and now aims to keep those chances alive Saturday when it visits Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va.

Syracuse Fighting to Extend Its Season

The Orange (12-16, 6-11 ACC) snapped a three-game losing streak with their victory over NC State and now face the Hokies (12-16, 7-10), who nearly upset No. 19 Louisville before falling 71-66 on Tuesday.

Head coach Adrian Autry is proud of his team’s resilience despite a challenging season.

“They have no quit in them,” Autry said. “That’s what you want. We are still playing for us and nobody else.”

Syracuse remains hopeful about its postseason chances.

“We want to be in the ACC Tournament because at the end of the day, we feel like we can still play some basketball,” Autry added. “If you start breaking down games, we were in a lot of games, lost a lot of games we had control of. We feel confident. At the end of the day, we have to get ready for our next opponent.”

J.J. Starling leads the Orange in scoring, averaging 18.4 points per game—fifth in the ACC. Eddie Lampkin provides a strong interior presence and is coming off his 12th double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Virginia Tech Hoping to Bounce Back

The Hokies have dropped three of their last four and are on the brink of their first losing season in a decade. On senior day, they hope to limit turnovers, which have been a major issue. Virginia Tech committed a season-high 22 turnovers against Louisville, something that frustrated head coach Mike Young.

“Twenty-two turnovers. It’s miserable,” Young said. “Having said that, I’m elated with the team’s competitive spirit.”

Virginia Tech averages 13.1 turnovers per game, while Syracuse isn’t far behind with 12.4. For the Hokies to secure a win, they will need a strong showing from Tobi Lawal, who leads the team with 12.5 points per game. Lawal, however, was held to just two points on 1-of-4 shooting against Louisville.
