Utah, West Virginia Continue to Battle Their Way Through Big 12 Play
The Utah Utes and West Virginia Mountaineers are both looking to find consistency as they meet in a crucial Big 12 matchup on Saturday in Morgantown, W.Va.
Can Utah Build on Its Momentum?
Utah (13-9, 5-6 Big 12) is coming off an important 72-59 home win over Colorado on Wednesday. The Utes closed the game on a 20-9 run, turning a tight contest into a convincing victory. Gabe Madsen led the way with 17 points, making key shots down the stretch.

“It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but it was good to finish a game like that,” Madsen said.
One area Utah will need to improve is free-throw shooting. The Utes missed 17 attempts, finishing just 18-for-35 from the line. Still, head coach Craig Smith was pleased with the overall result.
“It’s a good win for us. It’s a game we needed to win,” Smith said.
With two wins in their last three games, the Utes are looking to strengthen their case for a postseason tournament berth as they push through the second half of conference play.
West Virginia Adjusting Without Tucker DeVries
West Virginia (14-8, 5-6 Big 12) is trying to bounce back after a tough 65-60 road loss at TCU on Wednesday. It was the Mountaineers’ sixth loss in their last nine games.
Adding to the challenge, they recently learned that second-leading scorer Tucker DeVries will miss the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery. Despite the setback, head coach Darian DeVries is confident his team will keep competing.
“We play with the guys we’ve got,” DeVries said. “That’s just part of it. Guys are out there competing, and that’s what we roll with.”
West Virginia remains in the mix for an NCAA Tournament berth but needs to get back on track quickly. The Mountaineers will lean on Javon Small, who had 20 points and seven assists against TCU, as well as reserves Joseph Yesufu (11 points) and Eduardo Andre (10 points), who provided solid contributions in the loss.
Who Will Gain Ground in the Big 12?
Both teams are fighting to stay relevant in the conference and postseason picture. Utah is looking to sustain its recent improvement, while West Virginia hopes to overcome adversity and turn things around.
