Creighton, Xavier Climbing at the Right Time

Big East tournament seeding and NCAA Tournament positioning are on the line as Creighton visits Xavier in a crucial Big East showdown Saturday in Cincinnati.

Creighton Aims to Stay Ahead

Creighton (20-8, 13-4 Big East) is looking to maintain its one-game lead over third-place Marquette in the conference standings. While catching first-place St. John’s would require a perfect finish and some help, the Bluejays remain in the hunt.

Despite a 75-65 victory over last-place DePaul on Wednesday, head coach Greg McDermott was far from impressed with his team’s performance.

“Thirteen turnovers, unacceptable. Fifty percent from the field, basically, in the second half by DePaul is not acceptable,” McDermott said. “We’re going to have to be better. We’re going to go into a hornet’s nest on Saturday and if we think this is good enough, we’re kidding ourselves.”

The Bluejays are powered by fifth-year standout Ryan Kalkbrenner, who averages 18.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game. Point guard Steven Ashworth contributes 17.0 points and 6.9 assists per contest.

Xavier’s Late-Season Surge

Xavier (18-10, 10-7 Big East) is peaking at the right time, riding a four-game winning streak in conference play. The Musketeers, who boast a strong 13-2 home record, are looking to secure a top-five seed in the Big East Tournament and boost their NCAA Tournament hopes.

Ranked 52nd in the NCAA’s NET rankings, Xavier showed resilience in its latest win over Seton Hall. After leading by 21 points in the second half, the Musketeers held on for a 73-66 road victory.

“At this time of year, there’s a lot to be said for just being able to find a way to leave with a road victory,” Xavier head coach Sean Miller said. “They’re not easy to get at any point in the year, but especially late when teams have different pressure on them.”

Zach Freemantle leads Xavier with 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures in all 25 games this season. Meanwhile, sophomore Dailyn Swain has stepped up over the last 10 games, averaging 12.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists.

The Matchup

Creighton has dominated this series lately, winning the last three meetings, including an 86-77 victory in Omaha on Jan. 29. Xavier, however, is playing its best basketball of the season and will look to use its home-court advantage to reverse the trend.

With conference standings and tournament implications on the line, expect an intense battle in Cincinnati.
