College Football Week 0 Odds

Keep an eye on the latest College Football Odds and monitor how the lines change throughout the week.

College football’s Week 0 typically features some “money” games. FBS teams will often pay FCS teams to come to them for a home game and what should be an easy win. We have two such games this week. FCS Montana State travels to New Mexico and FCS Delaware State gets an early vacation in Hawaii.

Week 0 will also feature another season opener in Dublin, Ireland. This year, it’s Florida State and Georgia Tech. The Seminoles are an 11.5-point favorite over the Yellow Jackets. SMU is favored by 27.5 over Nevada. The Wolfpack went 2-10 last year.

That’s not even the biggest spread on the board. Hawaii is a 38.5-point favorite over the Hornets of Delaware State. Delaware State went 1-10 last season and for all the college football trivia nerds out there, the Hornets hold the record for the worst loss in FCS history. In 1980, Delaware State lost to Portland State, 105-0.

College Football Week 0 Predictions

Let’s take a look at the featured College Football Week 0 games and make our spread, total, and moneyline NCAAF picks for each game.

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech Odds

TeamMoneylineSpreadTotal
Florida State-450-11.5 (-110)55.5 (-110)
Georgia Tech+340+11.5 (-110)55.5 (-110)

The 2024-25 college football season kicks off in Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, with this ACC showdown. Florida State replaces QB Jordan Travis with former 5-star D.J. Uiagalelei. The Seminoles have won 19 of their last 20 games and having an experienced quarterback can help keep that trend moving in the right direction.

FSU is 11-4 SU in its last 15 games against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets, however, are 8-1 ATS in the last nine games against the Seminoles. Georgia Tech finished last season 4-2 SU and 5-1 ATS in its last six games. The Yellow Jackets are just 1-5 SU in their last six season openers.

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech Predictions

There is no question the Seminoles’ roster is better and deeper than Georgia Tech’s. Yes, FSU must replace an outstanding quarterback in Travis, but Uiagalelei has plenty of experience. He’ll have a number of weapons too, but the big key for FSU head coach Mike Norvell is the defense.

Florida State was one of the best defenses in the country last season. They were 11th (179.7 ypg) against the pass and 18th (19.3 ppg) in scoring defense in 2023. The Seminoles reload the defense with a wealth of four- and five-star talent.

Defense at Georgia Tech last season was optional. The Jackets finished 128th against the run and 120th in total defense last year. They will have a new coordinator in Tyler Santucci, but taking on the likes of Florida State will take a superhuman effort.

This spread opened at some sportsbooks as high as 14 points. That led to early bettors jumping on the Yellow Jackets and the points. That has pushed the line down to 11.5. In the Norvell era at FSU, these two teams have only played once. That was in 2022. The Seminoles rolled up 642 yards of offense, including 246 on the ground, and won 41-16. There is value on the ‘Noles against that Tech defense.

Bet: Florida State (-450), Florida State -11.5 (-110), Over 55.5 (-110)

Montana State vs. New Mexico Odds

TeamMoneylineSpreadTotal
Montana State-350-9.553.5
New Mexico+275+9.553.5

It’s a money game for New Mexico as they host FCS power Montana State. The Bobcats are no joke. They have been an FCS playoff participant in each of the last five seasons. Over those five seasons (not counting 2020’s COVID year), Montana State is 51-18 and played for a national championship in 2021.

The Lobos have a new head coach in Bronco Mendenhall and a roster that needs revamped. New Mexico went 4-8 last season and 6-6 ATS. Over their final 10 games of the 2023 season, the Lobos saw the Over cash in seven games. New Mexico surrendered 38 points per game over the final seven.

Montana State vs. New Mexico Predictions

There is a reason why the FCS team is favored in this one. The Bobcats didn’t play an FBS team last year, but they have proven themselves against the Mountain West. Montana State lost to Wyoming 19-16 in 2021. That was the same season they finished 12-3 and lost to perennial power North Dakota State in the FCS championship game.

The Bobcats return most of their roster from a team that lost in the second round of the FCS playoffs in overtime last year. Mendenhall needs to retool the Lobos defense and he starts basically from scratch on offense. Don’t expect much from New Mexico, other than a spirited defense that should keep this total in the 40s.

Bet: Montana State (-350), New Mexico +9.5 (-110), Under 53.5 (-110)

SMU vs. Nevada Odds

TeamMoneylineSpreadTotal
SMU-4500-27.5 (-110)57.5 (-110)
Nevada+1600+27.5 (-110)57.5 (-110)

These two teams have played exactly once in college football history. SMU scored the first 38 points of the 2009 Hawaii Bowl and went on to win 45-10. Fast forward 15 years later and the Mustangs are a huge favorite to pull out a similar outcome.

The Mustangs went 11-3 SU and 8-6 ATS last season, their final one in the AAC. They beat Tulane to claim the AAC championship before moving into the ACC this season. Nevada went 2-10 SU and 6-6 ATS in 2023. Five of the Wolfpack’s last seven games last season went Over the total. That tells you how bad the defense was as the offense only averaged 17.3 points per game (127th in FBS).

SMU vs. Nevada Predictions

The big question here is can the Mustangs cover the four-touchdown spread. All signs point to yes. SMU returns QB Preston Stone (3,197 yds., 28 TDs) and six other starters on an offense that averaged 38.7 points per game (8th) last season. The defense was equally as good finishing 11th in scoring, allowing 17.8 points per game.

The Mustangs had seven games last season in which they faced point spreads of 20-plus points. They covered six of them. Nevada has a first-year coach in Jeff Choate who was the Texas DC last year and a head coach at Montana State before that. The Wolfpack brought in a ton of transfers through the portal, but Choate has a long way to go.

There’s no doubt SMU wins. It’s a matter of does SMU’s defense keep Nevada out of the end zone all night and/or do the Mustangs take their foot off the gas in the second half with a big lead? This total opened at 54.5 and is all the way up to 57.5 now. By game time, it might hit 59. Either way, play the Under, but definitely if the total spikes even more.Bet: ML pass, SMU -27.5 (-110), Under 57.5 (-110)

Bet: ML pass, SMU -27.5 (-110), Under 57.5 (-110)

Delaware State vs Hawaii Odds

TeamMoneylineSpreadTotal
Delaware State+8000+38.556.5
Hawaii-100000-38.556.5

The Delaware State Hornets are one of the worst football programs in America. They last had a winning season in 2012. In the 11 seasons since, the Hornets are 28-89 SU, including 1-10 last season. Delaware State was only on the board twice last season and failed to cover against Miami (OH) and Army. They were 39.5- and 38.5-point underdogs, respectively. Both games went Over the total as well.

Hawaii went 5-8 last year in the second season under former Warriors record-setting quarterback Timmy Chang. Chang will have six starters back on both offense and defense. That should help Hawaii keep games close. The Warriors were just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games last season. Four of their last five games went Under the total in 2023.

Delaware State vs. Hawaii Predictions

Playing an FCS program that hasn’t had a winning season in over a decade should provide the Warriors with their first win of the season. Don’t let the big spread scare you either. You already saw what happened last year when DSU played FBS opponents.

Traveling across the country isn’t easy for any football team, especially one not accustomed to winning. The Hornets will have a short time to adjust to the time difference and likely are looking forward to an experience they won’t forget.

What they will forget though is the loss they will take. Hawaii QB Brayden Schager and his 3,542 passing yards return along with WRs Pofele Ashlock and Steven McBride. Hawaii’s skill and it’s playing at home will give it a season-opening victory. Covering a 38.5-point spread is iffy though for a team that didn’t score more than 40 points once last season.

Bet: ML pass, ATS pass, Under 56.5

Best Bets for College Football Week 0

There are only four games on the 2024-25 College Football Week 0 schedule. After reviewing the entire slate of games, the following are our Week 0 best bets.

  • Florida State -11.5 (-110)
  • SMU vs. Nevada Under 57.5 (-110)

The bets keep coming in on Georgia Tech. Don’t be surprised if you find this spread down around 10 by game time. The ‘Noles are 19-1 SU in their last 20 games and covered their season opener last year, a 45-24 win over LSU.

SMU’s defense was a top-20 unit in almost every statistical category. The Mustangs defense was also outstanding on the road too, which is why the Under has cashed in 8 of SMU’s last 13 road games. Look for the SMU defense to come up big against a Nevada offense that will struggle early in 2024.
