Encore Sets Up Vastly Differently for No. 11 Alabama, Michigan
A year ago, Alabama and Michigan clashed as part of the College Football Playoff, with the Wolverines claiming their first-ever national title. This year, the two storied programs meet again, but in a vastly different context: the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday.
Alabama Aiming to Salvage Season with 10 Wins
Alabama (9-3), ranked No. 11, just missed the expanded 12-team playoff and is now focused on extending its streak of 10-win seasons to 17. Despite falling short of championship aspirations, the Crimson Tide are determined to make the most of this postseason opportunity.
“One of the goals that is left to achieve is reaching 10 wins,” said standout guard Tyler Booker. “That’s at the forefront of our minds right now.”
The Crimson Tide face challenges, particularly in the secondary. All-American safety Malachi Moore recently underwent season-ending surgery, joining Keon Sabb on the injured list. Additionally, safety DeVonta Smith transferred to Notre Dame. To add to the turmoil, Alabama has lost two players to Michigan via the transfer portal: defensive lineman Damon Payne Jr. and running back Justice Haynes.
Richard Young, who has tallied 140 yards on 25 carries, is expected to step up in Haynes’ absence. Quarterback Jalen Milroe, the team’s leading rusher with 719 yards and 20 touchdowns, will continue to anchor the offense. Milroe has also thrown for 2,652 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
Michigan’s Tumultuous Season
Michigan (7-5) has seen a steep decline since last season’s title run, and several key players are opting out of the bowl game. Running back Kalel Mullings, who leads the team with 948 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, declared for the NFL draft on Friday. Second-string rusher Donovan Edwards (589 yards) opted out earlier.
Defensive tackles Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, cornerback Will Johnson, and tight end Colston Loveland also opted for the draft, leaving significant gaps in the lineup.
Quarterback Davis Warren has had an up-and-down year, throwing more interceptions (nine) than touchdowns (six). Complicating his future, Michigan signed top 2025 recruit Bryce Underwood, who is expected to start upon arrival. Despite uncertainty, Warren remains focused on the upcoming game.
“He’s been clear that he cares about me and wants what’s best for me,” Warren said of coach Sherrone Moore. “I know in this day and age what that looks like.”
A Special Opportunity for Rayshaun Benny
One Michigan player with extra motivation is defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, who broke his leg in the first quarter of last year’s matchup against Alabama. For Benny, this game represents a personal redemption.

“I didn’t get a chance to play last year, so this will be my national championship,” Benny said.
A Storied Bowl History
This marks the seventh all-time meeting between the programs, with the series tied at 3-3. Five of their previous encounters have come in bowl games, including two in Tampa. Alabama won the 1997 Outback Bowl, while Michigan claimed the 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl.
While this year’s ReliaQuest Bowl lacks the stakes of last season’s CFP semifinal, both teams aim to end their campaigns on a high note, fueled by pride and opportunity.
