Carolina’s Rebuild Under New Coach Dave Canales
The Carolina Panthers are entering the 2024 season with a fresh perspective, led by new head coach Dave Canales, who was previously the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Canales is expected to fast-track the development of second-year quarterback Bryce Young. Known for his work with Baker Mayfield last year, Canales is hoping to bring out the best in Young.
“We want to establish the run, but we’re also going to push the ball down the field,” said Young. “Our goal is to create the most efficient operation possible.”
Carolina struggled significantly last season, finishing with a dismal 2-15 record. The offensive line gave up 65 sacks—one of the worst in the league. To help protect Young, the Panthers signed veteran guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis. They also revamped their receiving corps, drafting Xavier Legette in the first round and trading for Diontae Johnson from the Steelers.
Young remains optimistic: “I have all the confidence in the world in my offensive line. I trust the scheme we’ve put in place.”

Saints Lean on Derek Carr and Klint Kubiak’s Offense
While the Panthers look to develop their young QB, the New Orleans Saints are counting on the experience of veteran quarterback Derek Carr. Now entering his 11th season and second year with the Saints, Carr is expected to lead the team’s offensive resurgence. Last season, Carr threw for nearly 3,900 yards and 25 touchdowns, guiding the Saints to a 9-8 record.
With new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak in charge, the Saints are hoping to take their offense to the next level. Kubiak, who was instrumental in San Francisco’s offensive success last season, will focus on improving the Saints’ running game, especially with star running back Alvin Kamara.
“Klint’s here to increase production,” Kamara said. “It’s exciting to see what he can do with our offense.”
The Saints have also made changes to their offensive line, including moving 2022 first-round pick Trevor Penning to right tackle and drafting Taliese Fuaga to solidify the left tackle spot.
Injury Concerns for Both Teams
Injuries are already a factor as both teams prepare for the opener. For the Saints, defensive tackle Khalen Saunders (calf) and linebackers Jaylan Ford and D’Marco Jackson (both dealing with hamstring issues) are missing practice. Marshon Lattimore, a key player in their secondary, is limited with a hip injury.
On the Panthers’ side, tight ends Ian Thomas and Tommy Tremble are sidelined with injuries, while running back Miles Sanders is dealing with a finger issue.

What to Watch For
Sunday’s game will be a test for both teams, with Carolina looking to see if Bryce Young can thrive with a better supporting cast and New Orleans banking on Derek Carr to lead a more balanced and efficient offense. The success of the Panthers’ rebuilt offensive line and the Saints’ new offensive system will be key factors to watch as these teams aim to make a strong start to the season.
