The Maple Leafs Can Win If…

The Ducks Can Win If…
The Ducks fell to 32-32-8 after a 4-2 loss to the Blackhawks. Anaheim, favored by -1.5 goals, failed to cover the puck line. The total for the game was set at 6.5 goals, but the combined score of 6 fell just short.
Anaheim’s defense struggled early, allowing two goals in the first period. They didn’t get on the board until the 10:16 mark of the third period, when Brock McGinn scored to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Anaheim’s offense was held scoreless until the third period in their 4-2 loss to Chicago. Brock McGinn netted his second goal of the season, while Mason McTavish followed with his second as well, coming on a power play with just four seconds left in the game.

The Lean
When making a moneyline pick, my choice is the Ducks to come out with a win against the Maple Leafs while playing at home. Considering the moneyline odds at +145, I’m placing my bet on the Ducks to win outright.
Our projections have the Ducks pulling out a win as the underdog. But if you’re not as bullish as we are on the Ducks, we’d recommend at least getting a bet down on them to cover the puck line.
When considering the over/under line, which is currently at 6.5 goals, we believe that this game will remain below that figure, and we recommend wagering on the under.
Maple Leafs Aim to Extend Division Lead Against Streaking Ducks in California Finale
The Toronto Maple Leafs are closing out their West Coast swing with a pivotal clash against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night at the Honda Center. With the Atlantic Division standings razor-thin, every point matters—especially with a major showdown against the Florida Panthers looming midweek.
Maple Leafs Riding Momentum Into Anaheim
Currently sitting at 44-25-4 and atop the Atlantic Division with 92 points, the Leafs are only one point ahead of the second-place Panthers. With Florida visiting Toronto on Wednesday, Sunday’s matchup offers a prime opportunity for the Leafs to build a cushion.
Toronto heads into Anaheim with a 2-0-1 record over its past three games, capped off by a come-from-behind 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Captain Auston Matthews and veteran John Tavares powered the comeback, with Tavares netting two goals and Matthews adding a shorthanded tally and an assist.
The third-period surge showcased the Leafs’ resilience, something Tavares credited to the team’s locker room attitude.
“Just staying with it and not getting frustrated or discouraged,” Tavares said. “I liked the attitude in the room between periods.”
Tavares, in particular, has been scorching hot, registering points in six straight contests (8 goals, 5 assists). Mitch Marner has also remained consistent, extending his own streak to four games with 1 goal and 6 assists. He leads the Leafs in total points this season with 90.
Goaltender Anthony Stolarz delivered a rock-solid performance with 35 saves, improving to 16-8-3. However, it’s expected that Joseph Woll will get the nod in Anaheim despite his recent stumble against the San Jose Sharks, where he surrendered five goals in a 6-5 loss.
Ducks Seeking Third Straight Win
The Anaheim Ducks (32-32-8, 72 points) have struggled to keep pace in the Western Conference playoff race but have found life recently. A 5-4 overtime win against the New York Rangers on Friday marked their second consecutive victory and showed signs of a team not quite ready to pack it in.
Mason McTavish played the hero with the game-winner just 59 seconds into OT. Rookie Leo Carlsson was exceptional, posting one goal and three assists, while Olen Zellweger and Cutter Gauthier each chipped in a goal and an assist. Carlsson has quietly become one of the Ducks’ most productive players, amassing 20 points (10 goals, 10 assists) in his last 18 games.
Anaheim currently sits sixth in the Western Conference wild-card standings, 15 points behind the St. Louis Blues with just 10 games remaining—a slim chance, but not mathematically out of the race.
“We’ve shown resilience,” Zellweger said postgame. “We know there are areas to tighten up, but these wins give us confidence.”
Goaltending continues to be a mixed bag for Anaheim. Lukas Dostal made 26 saves in the win over the Rangers and now holds a 21-19-6 record with a .906 save percentage. John Gibson has been more efficient statistically (.913 save percentage, 2.72 GAA) but has seen less action of late.
Previous Matchup and Series Outlook
This is the second and final meeting between the two clubs this season. The Leafs won the previous encounter 3-2 on Dec. 12 in Toronto, with Max Pacioretty playing a pivotal role in that game.
Historically, Toronto has dominated Anaheim in recent years, winning eight of the last ten matchups.
What to Watch For
- Power Play Battle: Toronto boasts one of the NHL’s top power-play units (26.5%), while Anaheim ranks last at 12.1%. Special teams could be the difference.
- Goaltending Duel: Joseph Woll’s bounce-back potential will be under scrutiny, especially against a Ducks team suddenly finding its scoring groove.
- Rising Stars: Keep an eye on Carlsson and Zellweger for Anaheim, and on Matthews and Tavares continuing to lead Toronto’s charge.
