Islanders and Avalanche Look to Keep Momentum After Thrilling Wins
The New York Islanders and Colorado Avalanche are coming off dramatic victories, setting the stage for an exciting clash Tuesday night in Elmont, N.Y. Both teams are aiming to build on their resilience as they chase critical playoff positions.
Islanders Overcome Early Adversity
On Saturday, the Islanders battled back from a 2-0 deficit against the Carolina Hurricanes, clinching a 3-2 win in overtime thanks to Brock Nelson’s heroic game-winner just 2:03 into the extra period. The victory marked their fourth straight win — a season high.
The Islanders showed incredible resourcefulness after losing top defenseman Ryan Pulock to an upper-body injury just 15 seconds into the game. Newly signed defenseman Tony DeAngelo stepped up in a major way, logging 25:07 of ice time, the second-highest among the team’s blueliners.
Goalie Ilya Sorokin added to the drama, stepping in during overtime after Marcus Hogberg left with an injury. Sorokin stopped the only shot he faced, earning an unusual but crucial win.
Unfortunately, the Islanders received tough news on Monday as both Pulock and Hogberg were placed on injured reserve. To bolster their lineup, the team traded for defenseman Scott Perunovich from the St. Louis Blues and recalled goalie Jakub Skarek from their AHL affiliate.
“You never want to lose key players,” Islanders coach Patrick Roy said. “But it’s a great opportunity for others to step up and make an impact.”
Avalanche Break Through After Wild Week
The Avalanche capped off their roller-coaster weekend with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday. Artturi Lehkonen scored the game-winning goal with just 14.7 seconds left in regulation, helping Colorado snap a three-game losing streak.
The game also marked the second for Colorado’s new acquisitions, Martin Necas and Jack Drury, who were part of Friday’s blockbuster trade that sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. Necas picked up two assists, while Drury netted his first goal for the Avalanche on Sunday.
“It was big to get this win, especially with all the changes,” said Avalanche goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 33 saves. “It’s been a tough back-to-back, but this gives us momentum.”
The Avalanche remain five points ahead of the Calgary Flames in the race for the top Western Conference wild-card spot, adding significance to Tuesday’s matchup against the Islanders.

What’s at Stake
Both teams have plenty on the line. The Islanders are clawing to stay alive in the Eastern Conference playoff race, while the Avalanche are fighting to maintain their wild-card position in the West. With new faces and mounting injuries, both squads will need to dig deep to secure another crucial win.
