Blue Jackets Fighting to the Finish

At 38-33-9 (85 points), Columbus enters Tuesday trailing the Montreal Canadiens by three points for the Eastern Conference’s final wild-card spot. With just two games left, the Blue Jackets will need a win — and some help — to stay in the race. Monday night’s result between Montreal and the Chicago Blackhawks will determine whether Columbus is still alive by puck drop.

“We’re watching the game (on Monday night),” said defenseman Zach Werenski. “All we can control is our game. Hopefully it works out in our favor.”

Columbus certainly handled its business over the weekend, sweeping a home-and-home with the Capitals. Adam Fantilli notched back-to-back multi-goal games, and Werenski added a goal of his own in Sunday’s 4-1 victory. Werenski, who leads the team with 56 assists and 78 points, has been red-hot against the Flyers this season with three goals in three matchups.

Goaltender Jet Greaves has also been a revelation during the stretch run, stopping 90 of the last 93 shots he’s faced over three stellar performances.

“For him to come in here and do what he’s doing right now… it’s been unbelievable,” Werenski said. “He’s played incredible.”

Kirill Marchenko continues to lead the team in goals with 31, although he’s gone quiet since an April 1 hat trick against Nashville. He did score the shootout winner in Columbus’ last meeting with Philadelphia on Jan. 14.

Flyers Playing With Pride Under Interim Coach

Philadelphia (33-37-10, 76 points) has shown resilience of its own. Since Brad Shaw took over as interim head coach, the Flyers have gone 5-1-1, pushing several opponents to the brink and earning points in six of their last seven contests.

“You play with pride in these games,” said veteran Garnet Hathaway. “You play because you love it, because it’s your job, and for the guy next to you.”

Hathaway contributed a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa, and the team’s effort hasn’t wavered despite being out of the playoff mix. Travis Konecny, who’s been excellent against Columbus this year (2G, 3A in three games), leads the Flyers with 75 points. He’s tied for the team lead in goals (24) with rookie Matvei Michkov and Tyson Foerster.

Can Columbus Stay in the Hunt?

It all comes down to timing. If the Canadiens win Monday, the Blue Jackets will be eliminated before their game starts. But if the door remains ajar, Columbus will be all-in, hoping to extend its improbable run another day. The Flyers, however, are unlikely to roll over, making this a compelling and high-intensity battle.
