Flyers Look to Keep Rolling Under Interim Coach Brad Shaw
The Philadelphia Flyers have rediscovered their offensive spark under interim coach Brad Shaw, winning two straight games since he took over. As they prepare to face the struggling Nashville Predators on Monday night, the Flyers are hoping to carry this momentum into next season.
Philadelphia (30-36-9, 69 points) had been in freefall before firing John Tortorella last Thursday. The team was 1-10-1 in its last 12 games under the veteran coach and hadn’t won a game in regulation since February 25.
Shaw’s arrival has provided an immediate boost, as the Flyers have scored 13 goals in two games, including a 7-4 win over Buffalo on Saturday. Players are responding well to the new system, with several stepping up in key moments.
Ryan Poehling (two goals, one assist), Noah Cates (one goal, two assists), and Matvei Michkov (two goals) all had multi-point performances in the win over Buffalo. Michkov, a promising 20-year-old Russian forward, has been a standout, tallying points in five straight games. He now shares the team lead in goals (24) with Travis Konecny.
Shaw acknowledged that he isn’t trying to completely overhaul the team’s approach but instead focus on giving the players renewed energy.
“Our job is to pump energy into that (locker) room, help them get through these last seven games, try and build something positive,” Shaw said. “If that helps this team in September and into the start of next season, then perfect.”
While the Flyers are mathematically still in the playoff hunt, their chances remain slim. They are eight points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, but six teams stand between them and that position.
Predators Struggling to Find Their Offense
Unlike the Flyers, who have shown signs of life, the Nashville Predators are limping toward the finish line.
Nashville (27-38-8, 62 points) has officially been eliminated from Stanley Cup playoff contention and has lost two straight games. Their recent stretch has been rough, going 2-6-1 in their last nine games, with their offense being the primary issue.
The Predators fell 3-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday despite scoring the game’s first goal. Over their last nine games, Nashville has scored just 15 goals, averaging a paltry 1.67 goals per game.
Coach Andrew Brunette admitted that generating quality scoring chances has been a significant struggle.
Key Players to Watch for Nashville
Despite the team’s offensive woes, Filip Forsberg has remained consistent. The veteran forward leads the team with 28 goals and 39 assists and has recorded at least one point in six of his last seven games. He assisted on Ryan O’Reilly’s 17th goal of the season in the loss to Vegas, snapping an 11-game goalless streak for the veteran center.
Adding to Nashville’s troubles, Colton Sissons suffered a lower-body injury in the first period of Saturday’s game and did not return. Sissons, a key two-way forward who has played all 11 of his NHL seasons with Nashville, had to be helped off the ice and later left the arena using crutches.
Flyers Have the Edge in Momentum
The Flyers may be near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, but they are playing with newfound energy and have the offensive firepower to overwhelm a struggling Predators squad.
Meanwhile, Nashville is stuck in an offensive rut and lacks the motivation of a team fighting for a playoff spot. If the Flyers can maintain their aggressive, high-scoring approach under Shaw, they have a great chance to secure a third consecutive victory.

Final Thoughts
While the Flyers’ playoff hopes are slim, they are still fighting to finish the season on a high note. Nashville, on the other hand, looks like a team going through the motions. Expect Philadelphia to come out energized and take advantage of a struggling Predators team.
