Devils Take Injury Issues Into Matchup With Flyers
The New Jersey Devils are dealing with significant injury concerns as they prepare to visit the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night.
One game after losing starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom to an MCL strain, the Devils saw team captain Nico Hischier exit early in the third period of their 4-3 overtime win against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

New Jersey did not practice on Sunday, leaving Hischier’s availability for the Flyers game unknown.
“Obviously, he was unable to finish the game, so it’s one of these things,” Devils coach Sheldon Keefe said. “I expect him to be day to day, but we’ll just see where he’s at (on Monday), how things settle down.”
Hischier leads New Jersey with 24 goals, making his potential absence a major concern for the Devils.
Jack Hughes Playing Through Pain
Adding to New Jersey’s injury troubles, leading scorer Jack Hughes (57 points) is also playing at less than 100 percent, according to Keefe.
Despite these setbacks, the Devils have responded well, winning two straight games after a 2-6-3 slump. They currently sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division, but will need backup goalie Jake Allen to step up while Markstrom is out for 4-6 weeks.
“There’s not going to be a team all year that doesn’t lose important guys at times,” Allen said. “Marky’s been our best player all year and he probably will be when he comes back. But we’re just trying to hold the fort until he does.”
Flyers Look to Rebound After Consecutive Losses
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Devils 3-1 on Jan. 18 and will face them again Wednesday in New Jersey, making this a crucial stretch between division rivals.
Philadelphia won three straight games before dropping their last two, including a 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Friday. The Flyers blew a 1-0 lead, allowing two goals off odd-man rushes in a 55-second span late in the first period.
“We make two bad mistakes losing our high man at the end of the first period,” Flyers coach John Tortorella said. “That cost us two goals. That’s the difference in the game, for me.”
Flyers’ Forward Lines Under Scrutiny
Tortorella hinted that line changes could be coming, particularly regarding his top trio of Owen Tippett, Morgan Frost, and Travis Konecny.
“It just hasn’t worked,” Tortorella said. “With (Konecny) on that line, I’m just not sure that’s a match. Some of (Konecny’s) points when I’ve had him on that line haven’t really come with that line, so we’ll see what the lines shake out for our next game.”
At Sunday’s practice, the only forward-line adjustment was Scott Laughton replacing Anthony Richard on the fourth line. Laughton missed the last three games due to a family matter.
Defensive Concerns for Flyers
The Flyers also practiced without defenseman Egor Zamula, who missed Friday’s game with an upper-body injury. His status for Monday remains uncertain.
