Capitals Face Confident Kraken in Clash of Momentum
The Washington Capitals aren’t just riding high because of Alex Ovechkin’s record-breaking season — they’re leading the NHL standings with 69 points after 47 games. On Thursday, the Capitals take on the Seattle Kraken, who are surging at the right time as they push for a Western Conference wild-card spot.
Washington’s season has surpassed expectations. With five straight wins and an 11-game point streak (8-0-3), the Caps are proving they’re more than just Ovechkin’s scoring legacy.
“We’re proud of where we are,” said head coach Spencer Carbery. “We’ll keep building and grinding.”
Capitals’ Stars Shining
Offseason acquisitions Pierre-Luc Dubois and Jakob Chychrun have been game-changers. Dubois is second on the team with 29 assists, while Chychrun leads defensemen with 13 goals and 31 points. Both also boast impressive plus-minus ratings (+19 and +17).
Ovechkin, who started the season 41 goals behind Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894, has scored 21 goals in 31 games despite missing 16 due to injury. His goal against Ottawa last week made history, as he became the first player to score on 179 different goalies.
“Every part of his career is remarkable,” Carbery said.
Kraken Gaining Steam
The Kraken have won two straight as they play nine of 10 games at home. Jaden Schwartz led the charge with a hat trick in a win over the Kings, while Jared McCann starred with a goal and two assists in a 6-4 victory against Buffalo. McCann, who leads Seattle with 36 points, anchors a dynamic line alongside Shane Wright and Eeli Tolvanen.
“We’re starting to find our style,” said forward Matty Beniers. “Every line is contributing, and that’s how we need to play.”
Key Matchup
The Capitals are looking to extend their dominance with strong team play and Ovechkin’s continued push toward history. Meanwhile, the Kraken hope their newfound momentum and balanced scoring can lead to an upset and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Will Washington keep rolling, or can Seattle make a statement? Thursday night promises an exciting showdown.
