Blues Aim for 10th Straight Win Against Visiting Red Wings

The St. Louis Blues (40-28-7, 87 points) are on fire, riding a nine-game winning streak into their Tuesday night matchup against the Detroit Red Wings (34-33-6, 74 points). With a dominant 11-1-1 record in their last 13 games, the Blues are surging toward the postseason, comfortably holding a Western Conference wild-card spot.

Their latest victory, a 2-1 road win over the Colorado Avalanche, showcased their ability to grind out tough games against top competition. Head coach Jim Montgomery was thrilled with his team’s effort, especially given their grueling schedule.

“It’s the end of 10 (games) in 17 (days). We went 9-1; we lost the first one,” Montgomery said. “It’s very impressive what we’re doing right now. There’s something special going on, and it’s great to be a part of it.”

Pavel Buchnevich delivered the game-winning goal in the third period against Colorado, while rookie Zack Bolduc also found the net. Goaltender Jordan Binnington was stellar once again, stopping 28 shots to secure the victory.

Now, the Blues return home looking to match their last double-digit winning streak, which came during their remarkable 2019 Stanley Cup-winning season.

Blues Strengthening Playoff Push

The Blues have found their rhythm at the right time, with every aspect of their game clicking. The offense has been efficient, the defense has tightened up, and Binnington has provided elite goaltending.

A key storyline for St. Louis in this game will be the NHL debut of highly touted prospect Jimmy Snuggerud. The Blues signed him to a three-year deal after his standout collegiate career at the University of Minnesota came to an end. The 2022 first-round pick (23rd overall) led the Gophers with 24 goals and 27 assists in 40 games, making him a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to college hockey’s top player.

His arrival brings additional energy to an already rolling team, and all eyes will be on how he performs in his first NHL action.

Red Wings Clinging to Playoff Hopes

While the Blues have been surging, the Red Wings have struggled to stay in the playoff race. Detroit has lost four of its last six games and endured a brutal March, winning just four of 14 contests. However, they are coming off a confidence-boosting 2-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Goaltender Cam Talbot played a pivotal role in that win, making 20 saves, including a highlight-reel glove stop with 9.8 seconds remaining to preserve the victory.

“This is a big, emotional win, but we have to go on the road now and we can’t get too low or too high,” Talbot said. “If we keep playing our game, I like our chances.”

Talbot is one of the few Red Wings players with extensive playoff experience, and Detroit will need his steady presence as they try to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Forward +Lucas Raymond continued his strong season by scoring his 26th goal against Boston, giving him a career-high 73 points.

“The games are getting tighter and tighter toward the end of the year,” Raymond said. “You have to be able to lock games down and not just rely on offense. I think today was a good example of that.”

Key Matchup: Blues’ Defense vs. Detroit’s Offense

St. Louis has allowed just 19 goals during their nine-game winning streak, averaging only 2.1 goals against per game. The defensive pairings, anchored by Colton Parayko and Torey Krug, have been instrumental in keeping opponents in check.

Detroit, meanwhile, will need big performances from Raymond, Dylan Larkin, and David Perron to break through the Blues’ stingy defense. Special teams could play a significant role, as both squads have been solid on the penalty kill in recent weeks.
