Soaring Jets Host Sinking Sharks, Go for 10th Consecutive Win

The Winnipeg Jets will aim to extend their winning streak to 10 games when they host the slumping San Jose Sharks on Monday night.

The Jets returned from the 4 Nations Face-Off break with a hard-fought 4-3 shootout victory against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night, setting a franchise record with their ninth consecutive win. Meanwhile, the Sharks opened a season-long seven-game road trip with a 3-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Sunday, extending their losing streak to five games and marking their 11th loss in the past 12 contests.

Despite the defeat, rookie Macklin Celebrini scored his 18th goal of the season, moving him one ahead of Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov for the NHL rookie lead. Tyler Toffoli contributed a goal and an assist, continuing his point streak to six games (four goals, four assists). However, San Jose’s struggles persist, with Alexandar Georgiev making 33 saves but losing his sixth straight start.

“If anyone says they’re having a good time losing games, then I don’t want them on my team, to be honest,” Toffoli said. “It’s one of those things where we just have to keep working, keep trying to find a way to battle, and we need to get some wins.”

The Sharks have the worst record in the NHL with just 37 points and have suffered 19 one-goal losses this season.

Jets Stay Hot Behind Balanced Attack

On Saturday, Gabe Vilardi scored twice and Nikolaj Ehlers added another goal as the Jets rallied to force overtime before Kyle Connor sealed the win in the shootout. Eric Comrie made 21 saves, including three in the shootout, while Cole Perfetti extended his point streak to six games (one goal, seven assists).

“I just mentioned to the team that was a game where a lot of different things went on, and it’s those games late in the year that you need to get the two points, find a way to win,” Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel said. “It might be a playoff game, same type of thing. We were down and found a way to come back.”

Vilardi tied the game 3-3 with just 28 seconds left in regulation, tipping in a shot from Connor, who reached the 70-point mark (30 goals, 40 assists) for the fourth time in his career.

“It was a good start to this last little stretch with a win,” Connor said. “It’s tough to win in this league, no matter who you’re playing every single night.”

The Jets have been dominant during their streak, outscoring opponents 39-19 while tightening their grip on first place in the Western Conference with 83 points.

Key Players Return for Jets, Sharks Seek Upset

Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck and defenseman Josh Morrissey are expected to return to the lineup on Monday after sitting out Saturday’s game following their participation in the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Jets have had the upper hand in previous meetings with the Sharks this season. On Oct. 18, Ehlers and Perfetti each scored twice in an 8-3 win, while Connor had two goals and Adam Lowry scored the game-winner with just over a minute left in regulation in a 4-3 victory on Dec. 17.

Sharks Look to Snap Losing Streak

San Jose will look to snap its losing streak by leaning on Celebrini and Toffoli, but the team will need to limit its defensive lapses and capitalize on scoring chances to keep pace with the high-flying Jets.

“I thought we had some really good opportunities,” Toffoli said. “A couple of mental errors, I think. It ended up costing us the game.”

With the Sharks struggling to find consistency and the Jets riding high on a wave of momentum, Monday’s matchup offers Winnipeg a prime opportunity to extend its winning streak and solidify its status as a top contender in the West. However, the Sharks will be desperate to turn their fortunes around and spoil the party in Winnipeg.
