The 2024-25 NFL season is finally coming to an end, and before long a new NFL Offensive Player of the Year will be crowned. This isn’t to be confused with the NFL MVP, as a position other than a quarterback has a realistic shot at claiming the hardware.
Of course, quarterbacks can still dominate here, so this year’s top MVP candidates – namely Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen – will be serious candidates to get the nod. In fact, it wouldn’t be crazy to see the NFL award voters just split the trophies up, giving the MVP to one and the NFL OPOY award to the other.
Both quarterbacks have been arguably the best players in the league and their respective teams are very much contenders to win the Super Bowl, so why not?
But is that what will actually happen? And are there other contenders bettors should be eyeing to swoop in and stage the upset? Let’s find out as I take a look at the updated NFL Offensive Player of the Year odds and come away with a final prediction.
2024-25 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Odds
Player | September Odds | Current Odds |
---|---|---|
Saquon Barkey | +1600 | -10000 |
Ja’Marr Chase | +1200 | +2500 |
Josh Allen | +4500 | +7500 |
Lamar Jackson | +4500 | +7500 |
Joe Burrow | +4500 | +7500 |
As you can see, the odds for NFL Offensive Player of the Year have changed greatly since when the season first began. More specifically, Barkley has moved from a solid contender to an overwhelming favorite.
Given the price, you might be better off targeting someone to win the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
While quarterbacks can still claim this award, it’s worth noting that a non-passer has won in each of the last five seasons. The NFL appears to reserve this award to the best non-quarterback, and the pricing above suggests it’s basically consensus that Saquon Barkley is that guy for the 2024 campaign.
But is that as much of a lock as it appears? I’ll break down the top contenders before arriving at my official pick. Of course, if you want extra insight or tools to help you make elite betting picks year-round, regardless of sport, be sure to take our free trial for a ride.
2024-25 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Contenders
According to the latest NFL odds, the following players are considered the true contenders to win the NFL OPOTY award:
Saquon Barkley (-10000)
Barkley has had a magical season for the Philadelphia Eagles. More than once he probably could have had a shot to break the single-game rushing yardage record, but his team was dominating so much that he didn’t even finish the game.
Despite that, he has over 2,000 rushing yards and if he were to suit up in week 18, he’d potentially unseat Eric Dickerson for the all-time rushing yardage record in a single season.
Just as important as all of that? Barkley’s first year with the Eagles has also led to high-level team success. Philly has a stout 13-3 record and are locked into the #2 overall seed in the conference.
Given Barkley’s immense impact (Eagles rank #1 in rushing), the Eagles have a legit shot at reaching the NFC Championship this year, if not much more.
Ja’Marr Chase (+2500)
If Barkley doesn’t win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award, it might go to Cincinnati Bengals stud wide receiver, Ja’Marr Chase.
Chase’s Bengals are not a lock to reach the AFC playoffs, but it isn’t because of a lack of effort or weak production from their best offensive weapon. Despite a slow start to the year thanks to a mild holdout, Chase tore it up all season and has churned out 117 catches for 1,612 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.
As one would expect, those numbers are all good for the lead league in their respective statistical categories. Moreover, Chase’s massive impact has played a huge role in Cincy owning the NFL’s #1 ranked passing offense.
Cincinnati might not have enjoyed the team success they set out to this year, but Chase is having a season for the ages. At his nice +2500 price, he’s probably the best value bet to consider for this award.
Josh Allen (+7500)
While the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award is likely coming down between Barkley or Chase, there’s no sense in not living a little.
One way to do that is to double dip and bet on the eventual league MVP also securing this thing. It isn’t impossible, as Patrick Mahomes did just that back in 2018.
Josh Allen could certainly make a case to have that happen again, as he has put up eye-popping numbers during a legit MVP-level year. He’s admittedly done a good amount of it with his legs, but I don’t remember that ever being a deterrent for votes when Lamar Jackson’s name was being discussed.
As such, Allen’s production has been video-game-like, as he has dazzled both through the air (3,731 passing yards and 28 touchdowns) and the ground (531 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns).
Just as important, Allen’s Buffalo Bills own the second best record in the AFC. It hasn’t just been a great statistical year for Allen and the Bills. They also have a realistic shot at reaching the AFC Championship, if not much more.
Lamar Jackson (+7500)
The Baltimore Ravens haven’t been quite as dominant as the Buffalo Bills, but he’s actually had better stats than Allen on the year.
Jackson’s team did completely destroy the Bills in a face-off earlier this year, too, while Jackson has actually been the more prolific passer between the two. On the year, Jackson has an insane 39 touchdown passes to go with 3,955 yards, and he hasn’t been shy as a runner, amassing another 852 yards and four more scores on the ground.
There are admittedly some things working against Jackson. The arrival of a very productive Derrick Henry might cheapen Jackson’s overall stats in comparison to Allen (who has more of a no-name supporting cast), while Jackson has already been awarded the league MVP twice before.
And as noted, Baltimore hasn’t had quite as much team success as Buffalo has. That said, if we look at the raw numbers and ignore lingering narratives, Jackson has the better overall resume for 2024.
Joe Burrow (+7500)
Last, but certainly not least, is Bengals star passer, Joe Burrow. He doesn’t have as compelling of a case as Allen and Jackson, largely because his team is a middling 8-8 as I write this and they aren’t even a lock to make the playoffs.
All true, but Burrow fared quite well in two head-to-head battles with Jackson’s Ravens, and nobody has put up better numbers through the air this season.
Burrow has been forced to work with his back against the wall all season, seeing as his once stellar Cincinnati defense ranks just 29th in defensive scoring. Offensively, Burrow has pieced together the league’s 6th best scoring offense, as well as the #1 ranked passing attack.
More specifically, Burrow’s individual numbers are MVP-like. The other criteria keeps him out of the running for the actual Most Valuable Player award, but 4,641 passing yards and 42 passing touchdowns (both tops in the NFL) make him a fun sleeper pick for the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.
2024-25 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Predictions
There is value in considering other options beyond the favorite for two reasons. First, because guys like Chase, Allen, Jackson, and Burrow do all have mild arguments for winning. Secondly, because Barkley’s -10000 price tag is obscene.
Barkley’s odds are that egregious for a reason, though; he’s a lock to win. Anytime a running back tops 2,000 yards rushing and is within striking distance of a record that has held this long, they’re in play. If they’re that good and their team is amongst the best in football, I just don’t know how you confidently work away from them.
If we were talking about the NFL MVP or Rookie of the Year, then sure, we can hesitate just because those awards typically go to quarterbacks. But the NFL Offensive Player of the Year has gone to the top skill position player quite a bit lately.
This year, that’s Barkley. Nobody is actually betting on him at -10000, so if you had to do anything beyond avoid this market, Chase would be the play. But if you’re simply looking for a prediction for who will win the NFL Offensive Player award in 2024, it’s a no-brainer.
Bet: Saquon Barkley (-10000)
