If you’re looking to bet on rugby at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the women’s side might be the way to go in terms of predictability.

New Zealand enters as a nice -110 betting favorite, and appears to be the consensus play. I can’t say as much for the men. The men’s 2024 Olympic rugby sevens odds offer more value, but are far more chaotic.

Of course, the top favorite doesn’t always win. If that’s the case in women’s rugby in Paris, you’re betting hard at a -110 price and coming away with nothing. So, should you just eat those odds, or is there another country worth backing?

Paris Olympics Women’s Rugby Odds

New Zealand is the clear betting favorite at most Olympics betting websites. They come in with -110 odds after totaling 138 points in the World Rugby Sevens Series, and it’ll be awfully hard to bet against them with any confidence.

There are more women’s Olympic rugby odds available at the top sports betting sites, but they get ugly in a hurry. 

Every other team you can bet on shares the same price tag as Poland, which means all of those countries are really poor bets to do much of anything in this competition.

There is still merit in breaking down the latest women’s rugby sevens odds, of course, just because things get pretty interesting after the top favorite.

New Zealand is probably winning this thing, but let’s first explore why they’re favored and dive into some viable contenders before coming away with a winner prediction.

Why is New Zealand the Women’s Olympic Rugby Favorite?

New Zealand has dominated women’s rugby for some time now. They won the Commonwealth Games and World Cup in 2018, and they were runner-up for the World Cup in 2022.

At the Olympics specifically, they’ve reached the gold medal game both times. They finished with the silver medal in 2016, but claimed gold four years ago in Tokyo.

This was not a team to mess with during the last Summer Games. They went 3-0 with 88 points scored in group play, while the opposition notched just 28 points. Their offense was the most potent to get things going in Tokyo, and their defense was among the best as well.

Once the knockout stage began, New Zealand turned it up a notch, as they shut out Russia (36-0!), survived a tough battle with Fiji, and then easily dispatched France.

As if that isn’t enough to get on the bandwagon, their recent form has been fantastic.

The New Zealand women have won the Women’s Sevens Series in back to back years, with their most recent effort being rather dominant.

This squad has plenty of experience and ammunition backing a possible world championship defense, with Tyla Nathan-Wong (1,448 career points) leading the way.

2024 Women’s Olympic Rugby Contenders

New Zealand’s run to this point has been very impressive, and there’s no denying they are probably the most talented squad in this tournament. However, you can get some pretty good women’s rugby teams at nice prices, so it could pay to look at some alternatives. Here are three that stand out the most going into the 2024 Paris Games.

Australia +150

You’re basically getting the price of a favorite here, but compared to New Zealand, Australia gives you solid value. They look like a fine pivot, especially since they claimed gold in 2016, and advanced to the Quarter-finals in 2020.

Australia may have had another deep run in them, but they got upended by Fiji right away (14-12) in the knockout stage. Prior to that, they had one of the best offenses (86 points) in group play, and were also extremely stingy (24 points allowed) on the defensive end.

Not surprisingly, they were able to regroup and still claim 5th place in Tokyo.

They still have a fearsome squad, anchored by Charlotte Caslick and her 732 career points. We all know by now what a menace she can be, after all.

It isn’t as if they’ve been quiet in recent years, either. 

Australia finished second to New Zealand in the 2022-23 World Rugby Sevens Series, while they also claimed first at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, were first at the 2022 Rugby World Cup 7s, and were first at the 2023 Oceania Women’s 7s.

New Zealand bested them (and everyone else) most recently, but if there’s one team that is a direct threat to their Olympics dominance, it’s Australia.

France +750

The women’s rugby sevens odds see a considerable spike after New Zealand and Australia, with France offering bettors the third best price.

Their +750 odds look attractive, and they’re the hosting country, so they could get a little boost from the hometown fans.

France hasn’t been a pushover at the Olympics, though. Back in Tokyo, they opened up group play with a dominant 3-0 run, powered by 83 points. More impressive, though, was the fact that they allowed just 10 total points across those three matches.

They didn’t stop there, as France dominated China (24-10) in the Quarter-finals, ousted Great Britain in the Semi-finals, and then ultimately fell to New Zealand in the gold medal game.

France still claimed a silver medal four years ago, and they could be gaining some momentum after finishing 6th at the 2016 Summer Games. Since their near-gold win in Tokyo, they’ve secured a bronze medal finish at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens, and racked up second and fourth place runs in the Women’s Seven Series.

This squad also boasts loads of experience, with Jade Ulutule spear-heading the offense with 511 career points.

All things considered, France looks like an awesome value.

United States +2800

If we’re looking at viable gold medalists in women’s rugby, I can’t leave out Team USA. The women’s team was rock solid in group play in Tokyo (3-0 with just 33 points allowed), but ultimately couldn’t get past Great Britain in the Quarter-finals.

The US did battle back to reach the fifth place game, where they fell (17-7) to a very good Australia team.

Since then, the United States women’s rugby team has done enough to suggest they could take a big step in Paris. For one, they took home top honors at the 2023 Pan American Games.

The US also finished third at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens, totaling 108 points. That was good enough to slide them right behind Australia, and showcased their ability to hang with some of the best teams in the world.

They’re far from a favorite, but they are plenty viable. The United States is also expected to win a lot of gold medals at the 2024 Paris Games, so what’s one more added to the pile?

More than anything, of course, getting them at a sweet +2800 price tag is tough to ignore. 

Best Women’s Rugby Value Bet for Paris

The best women’s Olympic rugby sevens sleeper pick has to be Great Britain. Truth be told, I wouldn’t go very hard at anyone outside of the top contenders above, but if I had to, this is the squad I’d back.

Great Britain was plenty solid the last time they touched Olympic grass. They went 2-0-1 in group play, exhibiting solid balance and a particularly tough defense. Once in the knockout stage, they got past the US fairly easily before falling to France.

They’d ultimately fall to Fiji in the bronze medal game.

Great Britain was even nastier in 2016, when they held opponents to three whole points during an epic 3-0 run in group play. They again made it to the bronze medal game, but couldn’t get past Canada.

This isn’t a team that has done a whole lot to demand our attention, but they’ve been competitive in Olympic play. For a team that keeps finding themselves playing for a medal, I think taking a shot on them at staggering +3300 betting odds is worthy of consideration.

2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Rugby Prediction

You can talk yourself into a lot of different bets when it comes to the Olympics, but sometimes the favorite has the best odds for a reason.

Australia is a really good pivot off of New Zealand. And if you want to seek out some extra betting value, France at +750 is absolutely in play.

For me, though, there isn’t much reason to work away from New Zealand. They’ve had a shot at gold both times out, and I firmly expect them to put themselves in position to do so again.

Ideally you’re getting a bit more value than what -110 odds give you, but it could also be a lot worse. There are quite a few Olympics betting categories where simply taking the favorite and never looking back is advised – this is one of them.
