Emotional Homecoming: Lodeiro Returns to Seattle as Dynamo Face Sounders
Saturday night at Lumen Field will be filled with emotion as the Seattle Sounders host the Houston Dynamo—not just because of the match, but because of the man stepping back onto the field in orange: Nicolás Lodeiro.
The former Sounders captain returns to Seattle for the first time since departing as a free agent, bringing with him an unforgettable legacy that helped define a generation of success for the club. Lodeiro led Seattle to four MLS Cup appearances, winning two titles and adding a CONCACAF Champions League trophy to the cabinet. He remains the club’s all-time assist leader (95) and tallied 58 goals in 231 appearances.

“I really love Seattle. I miss everything about it,” Lodeiro said ahead of his return. “Of course, my focus is (Houston) and doing my best here. But it’s impossible to forget about Seattle because my time there was incredible.”
In recognition of his impact, the Sounders will honor Lodeiro with a pre-match ceremony—a moment sure to stir memories for fans and former teammates alike.
“We’re still trying to replace Nico,” said Seattle midfielder Cristian Roldan. “He showed us how to be professionals, to compete at the highest level, and to put the team first. Seeing him across the field is going to be special.”
Dynamo Struggling, Sounders Searching for Answers
While Lodeiro’s homecoming grabs headlines, both teams enter this Western Conference showdown in desperate need of results. Houston (0-3-1, 1 point) is still winless and has conceded eight goals—tied for the worst mark in the conference. A 2-1 home loss to Real Salt Lake last weekend saw Ezequiel Ponce score his first goal of the season, but defensive issues continue to plague the squad.
Seattle (1-2-1, 4 points) isn’t in much better shape. The Sounders are reeling from a string of injuries: Jordan Morris and Pedro de la Vega are expected to miss a month, while Paul Arriola is out for the season with a torn ACL. Head coach Brian Schmetzer also missed last week’s 1-0 loss to St. Louis City SC due to illness.
Despite their struggles, Seattle holds a strong historical edge over Houston, having lost just once in their last 16 meetings (12-1-3) across all competitions dating back to 2017. The two sides clashed in the 2023 playoffs, where both legs ended in draws before Seattle advanced on penalties.
International Absences Add to the Challenge
Both teams will be without several key players due to international duty. Houston is missing midfielders Jack McGlynn, Brooklyn Raines, and Sebastian Rodriguez, while Seattle will be without Obed Vargas and Nouhou Tolo.
With missing stars and mounting pressure, this match will test both teams’ depth and resolve. For the Sounders, stopping a familiar face like Lodeiro might prove to be their toughest challenge of the night.
