LAFC Searching for Offensive Spark
After opening the season with back-to-back shutouts, LAFC (2-2-0, 6 points) have stumbled badly, falling in their past three outings — two in MLS and one in Concacaf Champions Cup play. Despite generating scoring chances, the goals have dried up. Star attacker Denis Bouanga fired six shots — three on target — in last week’s 1-0 loss to Austin FC but came up empty.
LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo remains cautiously optimistic, noting that while the losses sting, his squad is still showing structure and intensity.
“We’ve lost three in a row, and that’s something we need to deal with and accept,” Cherundolo said. “This club has been built to win games.”
One of LAFC’s early issues is finishing. Through four MLS matches, they’ve scored only four goals, none by the same player more than once.
Sporting KC Still Seeking First Win
While LAFC are looking to stop a slide, Sporting Kansas City (0-3-1, 1 point) are still hunting for their first win of the season. A wild 3-3 draw with Minnesota United last weekend gave them their first point, coming after a spirited comeback from three goals down.
Head coach Peter Vermes praised the fight shown by his team, saying they haven’t been rewarded for some strong performances in the early going.
“It’s easy for a team not to fight, but we are,” Vermes said. “I don’t think in the first three games we didn’t deserve points.”
Sporting will once again lean on Dejan Joveljic, the Serbian striker who arrived from the LA Galaxy in the offseason. Joveljic tallied the equalizer in the 80th minute against Minnesota and leads the team with two goals.
Can LAFC Reignite in Familiar Matchup?
If there’s a silver lining for LAFC, it’s their recent success against Sporting KC. The Black and Gold went 2-0-1 against Kansas City last season, outscoring them 6-1 in the process.
As both teams continue searching for rhythm in 2025, LAFC’s experience and structure could provide a path forward — but the pressure is on to convert chances into results.
