2024 WNBA MVP Odds – Can Anyone Stop A’ja Wilson?

DocSports, The most trusted name in sports handicapping

This is A’ja Wilson’s world and we’re just living in it. The Las Vegas Aces star has been as dominant as ever offensively this year, and she and her squad will be eyeing a third straight title if all goes well.

The latest 2024 WNBA Championship odds indicate they have a good chance, and that likely correlates with Wilson’s odds to lock down the MVP award this year.

So far the 2024 WNBA MVP odds lean her way, but smart bettors need to turn over every stone before placing a bet. Let’s look at the latest pricing and see who could threaten Wilson for the top award.

2024 WNBA MVP Odds

The WNBA odds for this year’s Most Valuable Player award are up at sites like BetUS and several other online sportsbooks. A’ja Wilson is the current favorite just about everywhere, and it’d be a bit of a surprise if she didn’t come home with the hardware.

Why A’ja Wilson is the WNBA MVP Favorite

The Aces could heat up at any point, so to be perfectly frank, bettors might be getting a major discount with Wilson’s -200 WNBA MVP odds.

She is putting up a staggering 27.9 points per game on the year. I truly could stop there, but she’s even hauling in over 11 rebounds per contest. Consistency has also been a clear part of her game, particularly this year.

Oh, and did I mention those gaudy points/rebounds WNBA stats pace the entire league at the moment? Wilson isn’t a first-time MVP threat, either, as she’s claimed the crown before (2022 and 2020).

It doesn’t hurt that she’s also incredibly likable, either.

With Las Vegas looking to turn it on, Wilson could easily end up being a smash bet. I wouldn’t be shocked if her odds spiked from here, so pouncing on her at -200 feels like a good idea.

That said, a case could be made for why you should not bet on A’ja Wilson to win the 2024 WNBA MVP award. The biggest reason is her team’s weak 7-6 record at the time of this writing, as well as some reasonable competition.

Top 2024 WNBA MVP Contenders

A’ja Wilson and her team are probably the only thing preventing her from claiming the WNBA MVP crown for a third time. Still, there are a few more ladies who have a decent argument to be considered ahead of her.

After all, Wilson was dominant in 2023 and didn’t win, so anything can happen. With that logic in mind, here are the top two contenders to edge Wilson out for this hardware.

Alyssa Thomas +700

If there is a direct threat to Wilson, it is undeniably Alyssa Thomas. She honestly has compelling odds, especially given the fact that she’s almost averaging a triple-double on the year.

To be a bit more specific, Thomas is putting up an insane 12.7-9.8-8.1 line. Her 8.1 assists per game actually lead the league, while she’s also chopping in 1.7 steals and shooting 52% from the floor.

Thomas is a do-it-all stud for the Connecticut Sun, who by the way have the league’s best record at the moment. It’s true that Thomas isn’t even her team’s top scorer, but she is literally doing everything for a squad that could be hoisting the league trophy at the end of the year.

Napheesa Collier +800

I can’t ignore Collier, who gives you even more value at her +800 price tag. Her team hasn’t been quite as dominant as the Sun and she isn’t putting up the stats Wilson is, but she isn’t that far behind.

Collier’s Lynx are 12-3 and sit in first place of the Western Conference at the time of this writing, so team success is certainly on her side. And while she’s behind Wilson for raw production, you can’t sneeze at 20.7 points per game (4th in the WNBA).

The Minnesota star also averages a double-double with 10.1 rebounds per game, and even notches 2.4 steals per game. She’s doing quite a bit of heavy-lifting for Minnesota, who could very well be in the WNBA Finals conversation when it’s all said and done.

Best 2024 WNBA MVP Value Bets

It’s safe to say the 2024 WNBA MVP race most likely comes down to the three women I already discussed, but crazier things have happened.

Some bettors simply want more upside when laying money down, too. Most basketball betting handicappers will agree with what I just said, but if you seek upside, consider betting on these WNBA MVP sleepers.

Breanna Stewart +2500

The WNBA MVP odds aren’t as favorable for Stewart, but that’s the main reason why she feels like such an inviting bet. We’re talking about last year’s MVP winner, and a balanced superstar who has claimed this trophy twice already.

Stewart’s team has enjoyed more success than this year’s WNBA MVP betting favorite, too. It’s not like Stewart is taking a ride on her team’s coattails, either. She’s been pretty dominant with averages of 19.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game.

Statistically, I’ll be the first to admit Stewart probably isn’t there yet. However, her numbers remain solid and her team is one of the best in the league. That could be enough to garner my interest at this price.

Sabrina Ionescu +6000

Sticking with the New York Liberty, there’s rising star point guard, Sabrina Ionescu. The former Oregon product has delivered for the Liberty, as New York got to the WNBA Finals last year and is poised to return again this season.

Ionescu is a big reason why, and she’s busting with confidence after nearly taking out Steph Curry at the NBA All-Star game

She also broke the all-time three-point contest record across both leagues.

Three-point shootouts aside, Ionescu has triple-double upside and is a dangerous scorer, averaging 18.6 points per game on an insane 54.5% shooting from deep. Ionescu also dishes out 6.3 dimes per game, which is good for 3rd in the league.

When looking at talent, production, and team success, Ionescu stands out as my favorite value bet in this betting market.

Arike Ogunbowale +8000

One last WNBA MVP sleeper pick I’d consider is Arike Ogunbowale, simply because she’s second in points per game (25.4) only to A’ja Wilson.

She isn’t quite as consistent as Wilson is, but she can pour it on thick when she gets hot, as evidenced by her huge 40-point outburst back on May 25th.

As explosive of a scorer as Ogunbowale is, she does more than just put the ball in the hoop. Ogunbowale also averages 4.4 rebounds and five assists per game. Need more? She snags 2.9 steals per contest.

Despite hoisting an insane 23 shots per game, Arike still has a solid 33% mark from deep. She obviously isn’t the most efficient player, though, and her Dallas Wings are presently vying for last place in the WNBA.

2024 WNBA MVP Betting Strategy

Okay, now you know who the top WNBA MVP favorites are. You even have a few sleeper picks to consider throwing some cash at. But how do you actually approach betting on who will win the WNBA MVP award?

I’ve got a few WNBA MVP betting tips to keep in mind.

Target Value Before Prices Rise

One thing I mentioned earlier is that getting in on a player now, before their odds spike, is crucial. Possibly due to her team’s record, A’ja Wilson’s odds are down at -200, but it’s quite arguable they won’t stay there for long.

Wilson has been so good that she could be listed at -300 or even -400 and nobody would bat an eye. To be honest, you could say the same for Alyssa Thomas. If the WNBA MVP voters place value on across the board stats, she is a screaming value at +700.

Regardless, both prices will start elevating over the next couple of weeks. The time to lock in those WNBA picks for MVP is now.

Bet on Superstar Talent

This WNBA MVP betting tip might get you off of the Alyssa Thomas hype train, but maybe it should. Maybe it has to do with marketing, or maybe the lesser known players just don’t get the attention they deserve – but the winners of this award tend to be huge names.

Of the last six winners, one was WNBA legend Elena Delle Donne, and four of the trophies were split between Wilson and Stewart. Jonquel Jones is a pretty well known WNBA talent, but she’s the only one who some might say isn’t a bonafide superstar.

The point? Jones was an outlier when looking at recent history. I think players like her can win, but betting on star talent seems to be the way to go.

Back Top Scorers on Elite Teams

One last tip for betting on the WNBA MVP winner is to back elite scorers. And make sure they’re on a good – if even great – team.

Stewart and Wilson are two obvious examples of this. The years they won, they were some of the best scorers in the league, and their teams were top-3 squads.

Remember that outlier year when Jones won? Yeah, she put up a career-high 19.4 points per game for the best team during the regular season.

If you’re going to bet on who will win the WNBA MVP award, or another honor like the WNBA Rookie of the Year award, it might make sense to target someone who is putting up numbers, but is also enjoying healthy team success.

WNBA MVP Prediction for 2024

Who will win the 2024 WNBA MVP award?

The Aces don’t have the greatest record this year, but they have an elite offense powered by arguably the game’s best offensive talent. Wilson is pushing for 30 points per game, which is quite simply unheard of in this league.

If you want reasoning to not bet in favor of Wilson, look no further than her team’s record. There are also other WNBA MVP contenders who are putting up big numbers, too. I would absolutely be leveraging a big A’ja Wilson bet with a sprinkling on Alyssa Thomas.

Could the WNBA MVP award voters finally give someone else a look and bypass both Wilson and Stewart? For sure, and the person who makes the most sense in that case would be Thomas.

However you bet, I’d keep the WNBA MVP odds in mind and stick with the options detailed above.
