Alcorn State University (ASU), located in Lorman, Mississippi, is a historically black, comprehensive land-grant institution. Founded in 1871 by the Reconstruction-era legislature, it was established to provide higher education for freedmen, making it the first black land-grant college in the United States.
The university holds significant historical value, with notable alumni such as Medgar Evers, a civil rights activist who graduated in 1948. Students at Alcorn State were actively involved in the mid-twentieth century civil rights struggle, working to register voters and combat segregation.
