The Golden Eagles made the tournament last year in head coach Shaka Smart’s first season. For an encore, Smart and Marquette are off to a 17-5 start. All five losses are by five points or less and that includes a 75-70 defeat to No. 1 Purdue. The Eagles have Quad-1 wins over Baylor, Providence, and UConn. Marquette is currently tied for the Big East lead with No. 13 Xavier. The Golden Eagles tied for the conference regular season title back in 2013, which was the school’s deepest tournament run since a trip to the Final Four in 2003.
Sophomore G Kam Jones (16.0 ppg) leads five Eagles that score in double figures. Marquette is seventh in the nation in scoring (82.6 ppg) and ranked eighth in the latest KenPom college basketball ratings. Despite their successes, Marquette is a longshot to win the NCAA tournament.
